ENCAUSTIC PAINTING WITH PETRA ZANTINGH

The Thames Art Gallery is pleased to host Petra Zantingh on Sept.11, 2010 for an exciting one day workshop on Encaustic painting.

Petra Zantingh currently teaches in the Fine Arts and Education Dept. at  Redeemer University College. As a practicing artist, she continues to study and explore various art making techniques by participating in and facilitating various workshops and has had her work exhibited across Canada, the U.S.A and the Netherlands.

Encaustic painting is when richly coloured molten wax is applied to a surface with a variety of tools, brushes and painting irons. The surface can be built up and layered into rich textural surfaces or scraped back to reveal layers beneath. Petra also likes to incorporate nostalgic photographs using a photo transfer technique resulting in subtle but evocative imagery.

Participants will learn basic techniques, such as; dipping, line and edge, building up texture, collage and image transfer and the recipe for making encaustic paint from oils and wax.

If you have ever wanted to try this technique now is the time!  All levels of experience are welcome. All materials are provided. Please bring your own lunch and some photographs.

Register at the Cultural Centre Box Office: 75 William Street N, 519-354-8338, www.cktickets.com.

CALL FOR ENTRY - EYE FOR ART 2010

On Saturday, October 30th, the Thames Art Gallery, in partnership with the Carlo Rossini Memorial Diabetes Foundation, will open its doors for the fourth biennial Eye for Art Gala. Eye for Art is a juried exhibition and sale that has always been the premier showcase for Chatham-Kent Artists. The original Eye for Art ran as an annual exhibition from 1983 until 1996 as a fundraiser for the Thames Art Gallery. It was resurrected in 2004 as a biennial exhibition and became the joint fundraiser it is today.

The exhibition is open to all past and present residents of Chatham-Kent. All works must be original and completed within the last two years and not previously exhibited at the Thames Art Gallery. A maximum of 3 works may be submitted by each artist, and must be available for purchase.

$2000.00 in award money has been secured, making possible three Awards of Excellence (3 x $500) and one People’s Choice Award ($500). The awards ceremony will take place at the Eye for Art 2010 Gala on October 30, 2010, which will also feature a costume party, reception and sale. This year we will also introduce a live auction of the three works receiving Awards of Excellence.

Submission forms are available at the Thames Art Gallery, ARTspace and The Cultural Centre Box Office. Works of art should be brought to the Thames Art Gallery on October 12 & 13, 2010 during regular gallery hours 1 - 5 pm. A fee of $10 will be due at the time of registration.
