John Lee Hooker Memorabilia

As I look in my collection these days, one of the nicest memories I look upon, is the number of concerts I have been lucky enough to have attended. I never would have thought of saving my ticket stubs, would eventually turn into not only collector's items, but also helps an old guy like me remember what I was doing years ago----I get to relive a memory from another time and that makes me smile. Here are a few stories from my concert goings.

Ronnie Woods and Bo Diddley hit the road in 1986 for the Gunslinger Tour--I am not sure, but I don't think the revenue still exists--this show got my wife and I backstage to get autographs and a meet and greet with Bo and Ron---we didn't have tickets to this gig, but we did manage to get one of the advertisements that were placed in windows and posts around Toronto---I just found it in a box of rock goodies I had stored in the house and realized how cool this flyer happens to look now.

Johnny Winters hit the road in 1974, promoting the John Dawson Winters III album---April 4th 1974 Kitchener Memorial Auditorium with the GREAT James Cotton Blues Band opening for Johnny--I purchased my tickets at Music in Stratford---opted to drive instead of the bus that was arranged to take the masses---wouldn't you know it but one of the major storms of the year hits the area that very day---trucks are overturned on number 8 highway blocking traffic for hours and me with my brand new Camaro decided that Winters was just going to have to wait for better weather for me to join his gig---my brother Mike spent 3hrs. travelling from the Hanover area to Kitchener (crazy young people) hahahah he filled me in on what I missed. I did manage to get the poster from Music advertising the event and my tickets have been attached to the poster for the last 35 years.

I have seen Johnny Winters a few times over the years, but the last time I ventured to see him, I took the Kitchener poster with me hoping to get it autographed for my wall---Johnny is playing at The Honest Lawyers in London Feb. 13th 2004 (Friday the 13th) I had shoulder surgery the week before in London and my shoulder was not recovering quite right---oh well, I told Judy, what the heck, I'll check the shoulder in emergency at the hospital and then we can head off to the gig---well the hospital had different plans for me (they kept me for 3 days) so once again I missed the gig. I did send Judy and my son off to the concert and they managed to get 2 autographed promo shots of the Johnny Winters Band and I thought that was very cool.

Mick Taylor, guitar god from The Rolling Stones, playing at Kiplings In London, Ontario (long since torn down and now a movie theatre) November 1st 1989---oh yes I am excited--picked up this Kipling's Concert Calendar to go with my ticket---got to meet Mick after the GREAT show and he autographed quite a few of my Stones albums---nothing better than meeting one of your favourite music idols.

Lastly, Mr. John Lee Hooker is playing Massey Hall April 29th 2000---backup band is John Hammond & Bonneville/Linden--oh this is going to be the BEST---my son and I have floor tickets and are looking forward to this show big time, John Lee Hooker, we unfortunately get a letter on April 25th that the show has been cancelled due to medical reasons---well the show will never come to light as John Lee Hooker passes away in 2001---we are offered tickets to see the GREAT BB King at a later date, which we did go to. I put this little collage together as a tribute for the concert he never gave.

Well I hope you like these few memories I have of past concert gigs and how I put together the tickets and posters for display in my music room. Check out some of this weeks youtubes in tribute of these great artists. Allan Day----long time acquaintance of John Gardiner----I presently live in Goderich Ontario, retired (oh yeah) and live for the sound of music, especially from the 60's music explosion---I hope you enjoy some of my articles and they bring back some lost memories of bands gone by. Now I have to let you know that I am a HUGE Rolling Stones fan, collector, historian and I hope to hear any stories you might have on this GREAT Band from the 60's----email me at CK Times and let me know what you have or memories you have of this group. I will include stories and short stories on The Stones each week.
