My Strolling Bones
Somewhere Outside Mono White Label Album

Since my last column, I exchanged a couple of emails with Dave Bingham--lead singer of The Ugly Ducklings. If you happened to have followed the Toronto music scene back in 1966, one of the biggest groups at the top of your list would have probably been a group called The Ugly Ducklings (originally called The Strolling Bones). Formed back in the mid 60's, they had a short 2 1/2 years of huge success playing in all the local coffee houses and bars in the Yorkville district along with hitting all the college, university and high school areas in northern Ontario.

I was very excited to hear from Dave---he mentioned  a few of my facts were slightly inaccurate (he wouldn't tell me which) but he is presently writing a book about The Ugly Ducklings and we will all find out the ultimate truths of the band and their history---Now that is EXCITING, and I hope to get one of the first copies. Other exciting news from The Ducks is that, there are presently 5 NEW CD's available from The Ducks catalogue---which I currently have 3 of them and look forward to getting them all.

All of this weeks pictures are from my prized Ugly Ducklings collection which Dave fill's us in on the number or releases--- I am still searching for the Horizontal pressing of Nothing---hopefully one of the cktimes readers will find one in their collection and let me know. This is my on line interview with Dave and I appreciate him giving me permission to print this before his book comes out---hope you enjoy

Hi Allan.
- how ya, doin'?
- here's your questions answered........plus some weird facts..............
- the photo's are of the NOTHIN' discs with coloured labels. The RARE one is the one with the "Horizontal" text design. It was the first pressing of the coloured label, but was withdrawn and redesigned, 'cause we didn't like it.
- all the subsequent designs were ala: Vertical !

Did you play all the harp in the song Windy City? - (one of the best playing of the harp ever - least I think so)
 - yes, it was all me. When we mixed it I played around with the reverb knob on the Harp track, turning it up & down to create all the spatial effects!

Did you use a "D" harp for that solo?
 - no it was an A-harp (Marine Band) the tune is in "E".
 - Note: if you're trying to play along, your turntable has to be right-on-the-money, speed-wise, or you'll be out-of-tune.

Now from somewhere outside:

On the numbers for the album "Somewhere Outside"

- 2 pressings.
-The first was the white label.(most were very bad quality - skipped on "Do What You Want"). It was withdrawn after about a week.(approx 300 copies sold).
- the second pressing had the coloured label & the stampers were made by Capital Records instead of Arc Sound. The initial shipment had the Yorktown Logo up in the right-hand corner. Later shippings had the covers that were re-used after they destroyed the faulty first pressing. So, they had no logo on the front!
- less than 2000 pressed!

Did the whole album make it onto a 45?  -  No. Definitely not

Nothin', I Can Tell  - Black Yorktown - Label YT45001 (were there many copies of this) was it a second pressing?  No - this is the first pressing! The plaid came later. Possibly 500 copies.

Nothin', I Can Tell - YT45001 plaid Yorktown label. - see accompanying photo for RARE 2nd pressing with horizontal text). The third (& perhaps 4th) pressings had the Vertical Text design as shown in the second photo. VERY FEW of the 2nd pressing design actually sold. Less than 100 !  (I have never seen one of these, a collector in England Emailed me the photo). It was withdrawn as soon as we decided to redesign the label.
- total sales - 4,229 copies (all pressings)

She Ain't No Use To Me, 10:30 Train - YT45002 plaid Yorktown label - Vertical Text - total sales - 1,274 copies

Just In Case(You're Wondering)You Wonder,That's Just A Thought -  YT45003 - total sales -2,981 copies

Postman's Fancy, Not For Long YT 45005 - BOTH of these mixes were different from the "Somewhere Outside" mixes.
Rarest single - never released! Only sent to radio stations; & then withdrawn. (200 pressed)

Gaslight,  Rimb Nugget on Yorkville 45013 - total sales - 19,589 copies

Epilogue, I Know What To Say - Yorkville 45017 - Second rarest - withdrawn after 2 weeks in stores. (500 pressed) sales - unknown

Nothin and Gaslight on Arc (Underground Records) Arc 1035  No Info

Just In Case Your Wonder/Tobacco Road - (Nashville Teens) - Arc (Underground Records) No Info.- Both of these "Underground Records" releases were likely a
run of 1000. The guy who did it leased the masters from Arc Records, plus they pressed them for him. It was a labour of love, thing.

The Pain is All Right - Razor RS002 -  in picture sleeve.- 500 pressed.

I also see you have an  Arc Record label with NOTHING, I Can Tell - Hey Allan, I've Never heard of this !!

Allan Day----long time acquaintance of John Gardiner----I presently live in Goderich Ontario, retired (oh yeah) and live for the sound of music, especially from the 60's music explosion---I hope you enjoy some of my articles and they bring back some lost memories of bands gone by. Now I have to let you know that I am a HUGE Rolling Stones fan, collector, historian and I hope to hear any stories you might have on this GREAT Band from the 60's----email me at CK Times and let me know what you have or memories you have of this group. I will include stories and short stories on The Stones each week.
