RECORD STORE UPDATE
Tuesday, April 27, 2010
Well I was really excited about heading to Grooves Record Store in London for the 3rd annual Record Store Day celebration and I wasn't disappointed. Had to circle the block a few times to find a parking spot, which I took as a good sign that the store would be somewhat packed. Live music by The Strugglers was just beginning as I arrived that made the event even more festive. The Strugglers are Vince Braca and Carol MacQuarrie from London that have great harmonies worked out for past hits and an impressive repertoire of personally written material---they have been together for 7 years and play at the Fitz Rays on the 1st Saturday of each month in London.I was surprised at the Exclusive vinyl releases that were being offered on this special day. A wide range of musical tastes from Mississippi John Hurt, Elvis Costello, Nebula, Paolo Nutini, Owl City, a new Hendrix Live at Clark University, Devo, Jeff Beck, Flaming Lips, Mastodon, the ever exciting Roky Erickson, The Doors and a new song from The Rolling Stones that coincides with the release of the Exile on Mainstreet box set.
There were in store special prices a spin the wheel for store and donated goodies (which this columnist donated a few Rolling Stone 70's scarfs) which I couldn't believe the first winners name was Brian Jones---he told me most people ask him if he owns a pool --- funny stuff if you have a sense of humour hahah I like the fact that some collectors brought their kids who enjoyed dancing to the live music and how better to teach them that vinyl still exists.
Dave Clarke and Troy Hutchison started working at 7 in the morning to get ready for the Record Day and they were pretty exhausted by the time I left at 4pm---they weren't surprised at the turnout---pretty much like the 1st and 2nd years celebration--lots of vinyl was traded and sold on Saturday----great to see VINYL LIVES---my purchases for the day was a new Doors release and a very clean 60's record by Music Explosion---Music Explosion was a group from Mansfield Ohio who had a top 40 hit "Little Bit O' Soul" in 1967. Very Cool rim shots start off this great garage tune that they say paved the way for bubblegum music--check out their youtube this week. You know you have a great tune when it is covered by other big name bands, thanks to The Little Darlings who are the originators of the great tune.
If you missed this year's Record Store Event Day, we will try and remind you next year. Dig out some of your old vinyl and trade them in for cash or for some new music.

Allan Day----long time acquaintance of John Gardiner----I presently live in Goderich Ontario, retired (oh yeah) and live for the sound of music, especially from the 60's music explosion---I hope you enjoy some of my articles and they bring back some lost memories of bands gone by. Now I have to let you know that I am a HUGE Rolling Stones fan, collector, historian and I hope to hear any stories you might have on this GREAT Band from the 60's----email me at CK Times and let me know what you have or memories you have of this group. I will include stories and short stories on The Stones each week.
