FACT: Did you know in the early days of radio, that you had to pay a tax to have a radio in your house. My mom tells me that when the collector was on the street, everyone would phone each other to hide their radio until the tax collector was gone----now that is a blast from the past.
Now my thinking was, why would I pay for radio when the airwaves are already there---who would pay for Sirius radio, what a rip-off----Well, guess who has this GREAT format in his car---no more boring, annoying DJ rantings, listening to 7 minutes of commercials all to hear a crappy song played for the 5th time that day---putting up with the same news report at 8 in the morning and playing the same report at 10 in the evening----I have music all the time, all day long with NO COMMERCIALS, all for the price of 1 CD a month (plus my car isn't loaded with tapes and cd cases) It is just the most pleasant experience to get to listen to all my favourite 60's sounds at all times----The Tremeloes/Arthur Conley's Sweet Soul Music, Count Five, Psychotic Reaction/Crazy World of Arthur Brown's-Fire and not only music, but tidbits that this old rocker likes to hear---did you know that 2 members of Santana went on to form another great band, "Journey". Little Stevie's Underground music/Cousin Brucie's 60's revolution/Andrew Oldham's insight from the British Bands---all the Blues music, 60's/70's 80's Classic Vinyl, Punk, Soul all at my fingertips---I LOVE SIRIUS RADIO "I'm the new convert". For other music fanatics like myself, you will love it also. For all you old Hippies that can't seem to change your ways, get Sirius, and a new musical life will open your mind more than drugs ever did.
Now all of this is good for the musical artists, Sirius Radio pays the artists royalties each time they play their songs---commercial radio doesn't pay the artist any money, in fact they want to be paid for playing the song (shades of payola) radio, your day is almost over with those tatics.
I received a few emails this week, requesting some more photo's of my Stones collection, so I am very happy to oblige. My now framed Eames Pantone 3D Stones Tongue is a very cool collectible, looks great at the entrance of my Stones room. Another rare promo item from the Love You Live album era, the Andy Warhol Shopping bag, given out at the press party. From the huge Voodoo Lounge tour a Budweiser display Lightbox. In the mid 90's, an outfit from Japan made a collection of Die-cast figures, shown here are The Stones from 1964 era, The Stones at Hyde Park and my favorite The Stones Satanic Majesties Request era. From the 1980's came these very cool mini gum records with info printed on the back with full picture covers on the front and lastly 1970's vari vue flasher buttons still on display board ---hope you like some of the collection, I know I do.
I found this Rolling Stone site the other day on the Internet listing the 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time http://www.rollingstone.com/news/coverstory/209...7527/page/2 be sure to log on and check it out---lots of controversy here as everyone will be in disagreement about some of the selections. I know I have my thoughts on some of them---example, I don't think Dire Straits did a thing for Rock, never bought an album and never liked anything they wrote, but they seemed to make the list---I bet some of you cktimes readers have your comments also. Also what I noticed was all the youtube connections on each selection, allowing the readers to view these tunes . YES, I have been attaching them to my columns for quite awhile---great idea
Rolling Stones Tidbit: On the Bridges to Babylon Tour, The Stones invited many of their old friends and personal from their past to meet backstage at the Madison Square Garden's gig. Marshall Chess, (founding president of Rolling Stones Records) met with Keith/Mick and Charlie---Keith says, "Marshall, you gotta see this. your gonna love it"--Love what? We always wanted to make money from these Stargazers, follow me to this other stage for a meet and greet---for a mere few minutes of picture taking with the sponsors from Sprint, they were paid a quarter of a million dollars---that sum was more than they made on the Exile on Mainstreet tour in 1972---how the rock and roll business has changed, the Stones deserve every cent they can bank for all those GREAT SONGS written for us to enjoy and especially not owning any of their catalogue up until Sticky Fingers.
Another great rock n roll fact: Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harum is one of the most analyzed and dissected songs of all time---it has become the most successful in (2004) The Performing Rights Group certified it the most played song of the last 70 years--over 1000 cover versions and 10 million in sales---"16 vestal virgins heading for the coast" recorded 1 month after the band formed/shot them to instant success--based on Bach's "Air On A G String" and the song is just about a girl-boy relationship.

Allan Day----long time acquaintance of John Gardiner----I presently live in Goderich Ontario, retired (oh yeah) and live for the sound of music, especially from the 60's music explosion---I hope you enjoy some of my articles and they bring back some lost memories of bands gone by. Now I have to let you know that I am a HUGE Rolling Stones fan, collector, historian and I hope to hear any stories you might have on this GREAT Band from the 60's----email me at CK Times and let me know what you have or memories you have of this group. I will include stories and short stories on The Stones each week.
