Love Knows No Limit

Tuesday, January 13, 2004

One of the many reasons that I like the Bible so much stems from the fact that it is a wonderful love story – of God for mankind. There are, of course, many different love stories within the Bible. The Book of Ruth is a fascinating account of a man's love for a woman, one which transcends the barriers of race, socio-economic status, culture, and age differential. This short book is a great read for understanding God's love for us. There is also the Song of Solomon, a moving, graphic depiction of a man's pursuit of his bride, with passion and romance that makes Harlequin pale very badly in comparison. This book, too, is a powerful portrayal of God's love for us.

I heard an incredible story of love and valour this past week as I was preparing for the funeral service for Mr. Bob Lee, a well-known resident of Wallaceburg, who was a boat enthusiast extraordinaire. Several years ago, Bob and his wife, Dorothy, were boating up in the Kingston area. I'm not sure what caused it, but an explosion went off in the boat and it was soon engulfed in flames. There were at least 2 other children aboard, as well. They quickly got off. There was a small snag with Dorothy, however. She was not a swimmer and was reluctant to jump into the water. Bob knew that. He also knew that staying on board was not an option as they would have been burned alive. In a great act of love he did the only thing a loving husband could do: he put 2 life preservers on Dorothy and pushed her off the boat. He knew full well how terrified she was of the water, and how awful it would be to force her to face her fear. However, he also knew that if he really loved her, he would have to do what Dorothy needed, not what she wanted. Another couple, whom I met at the funeral, came along in another boat and rescued Bob and Dorothy. They spent a considerable time in the hospital recovering from burns and other injuries, but they survived. Dorothy was saved by love.

I had Dorothy's funeral over 10 years ago, but I only learned of this incredible story this past week. It has had a profound impact on me. Bob's act of courageous love is a vivid illustration of the Father's love for us. Our lives are like that burning boat. Without the Lord we would surely perish. But God sent His only Son, the Lord Jesus to get us off that boat and give us a new lease on life. Truly, love knows no limit.
