Wednesday evenings May 20, 27 and June 3 at 7 p.m.
This spring, spend your Wednesday evenings at the Chatham Cultural Centre learning about art masterpieces whilst sampling a beverage from the artist’s home country. We begin on May 20th with James McNeill Whistler’s Portrait of the Artist’s Mother. The actual title of this work is Arrangement in Grey and Black, but that wasn’t acceptable to the sensibilities at the time and the painting was re-titled in order to be accepted by the British Academy. On the second Wednesday we will discuss The Sunflowers painted by Vincent van Gogh. It is likely that van Gogh’s repeated use of the sunflower may have to do with the artist’s experimentation with newly available yellow pigments. The last work in this series will be The Kiss by Gustav Klimt. This work may have been influenced by the Byzantine murals he saw while visiting Italy, it utilizes gold leaf and is Klimt’s best known work of his ‘Golden Period’. Francoise Richard of the LCBO will be making the beverage selections for each evening, themed around the home country of the featured artist. This month will be the United States, the Netherlands and Austria. Please join us in Studio 1 at the Chatham Cultural Centre. Located in the Region of Chatham-Kent, Tulip Tree Needlearts is a chapter of the
Embroiderersí Association of Canada www.eac.ca. The aim of the organization is to preserve traditional techniques and promote new challenges in the Art of Embroidery through education and networking. Meetings are the 4th Tuesday of every month. For information on meetings or classes please phone 519 674-5538 or 519 354-8590. Workshops are designed to offer members an opportunity to learn both new and advanced methods of needlework. Projects and Classes are ongoing throughout the year. Stitch-ins are held regularly in members homes throughout the region of Chatham-Kent. These offer an opportunity for members to share expertise and ideas. Tulip Tree Needlearts offers group and individual courses through the Embroiderersí Association of Canada. Membership is $50.00 and includes a subscription to the quarterly national magazine Embroidery Canada.

The Wallaceburg Museum is having a March Break camp from March 16-20th, 2009. Children who will be take part will either be able to create their own puppet, get a green thumb, learn something about space, know how to dig up fossils and become an artist. The March break program runs from Mon-Fri 9am until 3:30pm and is open to all children from the ages of 6-12 years old. Pre-registration is required, to pre-register or for more info, please call 627-8962. Cost of the week long program is $15 per child/per day. Puppet Camp is a one day program jam packed with activities including looking at the art of puppet making, making various types of puppets like shadow puppets and marionettes. At the end, the kids will perform a small play with their creations. Nature Camp is another one day program where the children will get a better understanding of their local ecosystem and will be making a variety of eco friendly crafts. Archaeology Camp is a day long camp where the children participating will have the chance to experience a day in the life of an archaeologist by doing simulated excavation and other activities involving digging. Space Camp is a day program jam-packed with astronaut training for young people. Activities include rocket building and launches, creating their own planets and other fun scientific experiments. Art Camp is a day program where children will have fun discovering the world of art through an array of creative experiences through drawing, painting and collage.

Born in Vancouver, BC and raised in Dublin, Ireland, Stephen Fearing returned to Canada in 1981 and began pursuing a career in music. In addition to his successful solo career, Fearing is one of the founding members of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings along with Tom Wilson and Colin Linden. The consistent quality of work he has produced over his career has earned him a West Coast Music Award for Best Folk Music Recording and five Juno Award nominations as a solo artist. Opening the show for Stephen is singer/songwriter Catherine MacLellan. Classic Albums Live will perform the Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon at the Kiwanis Theatre on Friday, March 27, 2009 at 8:00 pm. Released in 1973, The Dark Side of the Moon was a huge landmark in rock music as it used synthesizers in a way never heard before. If you love chocolate and want to attend Chatham-Kentís premier chocolate-themed event, then save the date for VON's "Chocolate Lovers Dinner Gala". Typically held close to Valentines' Day, the event moves to March 28 this year. 2010 should see a return of the February date. Live and silent auctions, the legendary "Wine" raffle, and other fundraising activities will be part of the eveningís festivities. Lexie Martin, Auction Convener has had an impressive response for auction donations. "Businesses have been very generous," says Martin, "VIA Rail donated four first class train tickets return to Toronto valued at over $1,000." A free 1 to 1 1/2 hour nutrition lecture will be held Monday March 30 at 5:15 pm at the Chatham Kent Health Alliance Diabetes Centre, classroom B122. Taught by the registered Dietitian, the topic will be Shopping Savvy. This will teach how to be a smart shopper, read labels, save time and energy and make healthy meals and overall have fun with meal preparation. This lecture emphasizes healthy eating and is geared towards those with diabetes, impaired glucose or insulin resistance or their families or caregivers. March 30 to April 9
The 64th Annul Chatham Kiwanis Music Festival takes place. Festival events will all take place at William St. locations - Chatham Baptist Church, St. Andrew’s United Church and Kiwanis Theatre. Music students from across Chatham-Kent as well as from Windsor, Essex, and London are now busy preparing for the Festival. This year there are 875 entries in the Festival. Mayor Randy Hope and Festival representatives will conduct a Music Festival Opening Ceremony and Flag Raising in front of the Chatham-Kent Civic Centre on Monday, March 30 at 11:00 a.m.
During the first week Vocal and Intermediate/Senior Piano classes will be held at Chatham Baptist Church. Junior Piano, Strings and Instrumental classes will be conducted at St. Andrew’s United Church. School bands will be adjudicated at Chatham Christian Schools.
During the second week Junior Music Theatre and Speech Arts classes will be held at Chatham Baptist Church. Senior Music Theatre and Choirs will be at Kiwanis Theatre.
Festival programs may be purchased in advance for $10, beginning March 16, at Gospel Text Book Store, Frank’s Music Centre, Tony’s One Stop Music Shoppe and Musical Strings ‘N‘ Things. A limited number of programs will be available at the door of each location. The program admits the purchaser to all Music Festival events except the Grand Concert. Without the program, admission for each event is $2.00 or a pass for the Festival can be purchased for $5. There is no admission fee for children and students.

Thursday, April 23, 2009 the Chatham-Kent Museum, Thames Art Gallery, and Kiwanis Theatre are happy to present Quiz Night in Studio 1 of the Chatham Cultural Centre. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with the first round of trivia questions starting promptly at 7 p.m. Participants can expect 10 rounds of 10 trivia questions, with topics ranging from science, pop culture, music, art, history, and drama – and keep your eyes peeled for questions with local cultural significance!
This is a non-profit event designed to bring the community together for a fun evening of laughs, brain teasers, great food, and great company. Participants will enjoy delicious snacks catered by William Street Café, and a cash bar will be available for refreshments. Cash prizes will be awarded to 5 teams; 1st prize of up to $250 to the team who answers the greatest number of questions correctly, 2nd prize up to $100, and 3rd prize up to $50. There will also be cash prizes awarded to the “oldest” and “youngest” team participating.

The Kiwanis Theatre is pleased to present a night of Egyptian dance on Saturday, May 2, 2009. In partnership with local dancers, 1001 Nights "Alf Leyla Wa Leyla" will take you on a journey back in time along the banks of the Nile River to ancient Egypt where Pharaohs ruled the land. Megan Robbins and Susu Abdo invite you to explore this mystifying and exotic culture through the ancient art of Egyptian belly dance. Experience the many styles of belly dance from regional belly artists and students. A themed dinner catered by William Street Cafè will be presented prior to the performance. Cocktails are at 5:30pm, followed by dinner at 6:00pm. The show begins at 8:00pm. Tickets for the show are only $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and students.
