Wednesday evenings May 20, 27 and June 3 at 7 p.m.
This spring, spend your Wednesday evenings at the Chatham Cultural Centre learning about art masterpieces whilst sampling a beverage from the artist’s home country. We begin on May 20th with James McNeill Whistler’s Portrait of the Artist’s Mother. The actual title of this work is Arrangement in Grey and Black, but that wasn’t acceptable to the sensibilities at the time and the painting was re-titled in order to be accepted by the British Academy. On the second Wednesday we will discuss The Sunflowers painted by Vincent van Gogh. It is likely that van Gogh’s repeated use of the sunflower may have to do with the artist’s experimentation with newly available yellow pigments. The last work in this series will be The Kiss by Gustav Klimt. This work may have been influenced by the Byzantine murals he saw while visiting Italy, it utilizes gold leaf and is Klimt’s best known work of his ‘Golden Period’. Francoise Richard of the LCBO will be making the beverage selections for each evening, themed around the home country of the featured artist. This month will be the United States, the Netherlands and Austria. Please join us in Studio 1 at the Chatham Cultural Centre. Fourth Wednesday of every Month
Located in the Region of Chatham-Kent, Tulip Tree Needlearts is a chapter of the
Embroiderersí Association of Canada www.eac.ca. The aim of the organization is to preserve traditional techniques and promote new challenges in the Art of Embroidery through education and networking. Meetings are the 4th Tuesday of every month. For information on meetings or classes please phone 519 674-5538 or 519 354-8590. Workshops are designed to offer members an opportunity to learn both new and advanced methods of needlework. Projects and Classes are ongoing throughout the year. Stitch-ins are held regularly in members homes throughout the region of Chatham-Kent. These offer an opportunity for members to share expertise and ideas. Tulip Tree Needlearts offers group and individual courses through the Embroiderersí Association of Canada. Membership is $50.00 and includes a subscription to the quarterly national magazine Embroidery Canada.

The 64th Annul Chatham Kiwanis Music Festival takes place. Festival events will all take place at William St. locations - Chatham Baptist Church, St. Andrew’s United Church and Kiwanis Theatre. Music students from across Chatham-Kent as well as from Windsor, Essex, and London are now busy preparing for the Festival. This year there are 875 entries in the Festival. Mayor Randy Hope and Festival representatives will conduct a Music Festival Opening Ceremony and Flag Raising in front of the Chatham-Kent Civic Centre on Monday, March 30 at 11:00 a.m.
During the first week Vocal and Intermediate/Senior Piano classes will be held at Chatham Baptist Church. Junior Piano, Strings and Instrumental classes will be conducted at St. Andrew’s United Church. School bands will be adjudicated at Chatham Christian Schools.
During the second week Junior Music Theatre and Speech Arts classes will be held at Chatham Baptist Church. Senior Music Theatre and Choirs will be at Kiwanis Theatre.
Festival programs may be purchased in advance for $10, beginning March 16, at Gospel Text Book Store, Frank’s Music Centre, Tony’s One Stop Music Shoppe and Musical Strings ‘N‘ Things. A limited number of programs will be available at the door of each location. The program admits the purchaser to all Music Festival events except the Grand Concert. Without the program, admission for each event is $2.00 or a pass for the Festival can be purchased for $5. There is no admission fee for children and students.

Community artists are being asked to view selected works of the Thames Art Gallery Permanent collection. This viewing will take place in Studio 1 at the Chatham Cultural Centre. These works will be used as the reference point for a new work by those artists choosing to participate. The permanent collection pieces will also be on display in the Mezzanine gallery during the High Class Art exhibition May 15 - June 7. Artists must register at the time of viewing. The Thames Art Gallery encourages works of all media including two dimensional, three dimensional, multi-media and text based work. All new works will be on display alongside their permanent collection counterparts in the non-juried Community Arts Initiative exhibition Call and Response June 12 - July 26. The opening for this exhibition will be a part of the First Annual Summer Art Crawl, Thursday, June 18th! All work must be submitted by 5 pm June 5th to the Thames Art Gallery; a $5 fee will be collected at the time of registration. This call is open to all artists in the London, Sarnia, Windsor, and Chatham-Kent area. $500 worth of prize money will be awarded.

The Wallaceburg & District Museum 2009 Speaker Series is underway once again with its first event of the season. Herman Giethroon and Tom Chatterton from the Sydenham Field Naturalists will be presenting how their group have preserved the Sycamore Woods and will be sharing what their plans are for this year. ARTspace is pleased to announce its next solo exhibition, Laurie Langford: Guys & Dolls. Guys & Dolls includes prints, collage on prints, and photographic images of action figure dolls. Chatham-Kent Cemeteries is hosting its first-ever inter-denominational Easter Sunrise Service this year. It is being held at Maple Leaf Cemetery. The service will be conducted by Reverend Jamie Tiffin of Chatham Baptist Church and will feature seasonal music, scripture readings and will be held out-of-doors, weather-permitting, in the open area to the east of the Maple Leaf Mausoleum. Visitors are asked to park along the south edge of the first road leading along side the mausoleum, so as to allow other vehicles to pass, and may bring a lawn chair. In the event of unseasonably cold weather or rain, the service will be held in the Legion Memorial Chapel which is located to the south of the Mausoleum a little further along Maple Leaf Drive. For the past four seasons, the Ken Crone Trio has been performing to sold-out crowds from the intimate stage in Studio One. In partnership with local dancers, 1001 Nights "Alf Leyla Wa Leyla" will take you on a journey back in time along the banks of the Nile River to ancient Egypt where Pharaohs ruled the land. Megan Robbins and Susu Abdo invite you to explore this mystifying and exotic culture through the ancient art of Egyptian belly dance. Experience the many styles of belly dance from regional belly artists and students. A themed dinner catered by William Street Cafè will be presented prior to the performance. The Chatham-Kent Museum “Adventures under the Sea” summer camp is a great week long program to keep your kids active and occupied during those long summer months for children ranging from ages 5-9 (please see www.cktickets.com for dates and ages). At camp kids will learn about underwater life, be introduced to new sea creatures each day as well as learn about rivers and oceans and where to locate them on a map. Kids will have fun seeing and taking care of real live fish, and through arts and crafts, water activities, science experiments and games, they will be able to identify new things by the end of the week. Kids will have a blast on Environment Day as they learn about environmental dangers in the oceans, and how we can each make a difference to keep the planet safe! Early drop off is available in Studio One at 8:30am, and late pick up available until 4:30pm at Studio One for a small fee. The 5 day program runs from 9am until 4pm, and children will need to bring their own peanut-free snacks and lunches. Please dress appropriate for the weather as we will be spending some time each day outside. This week long program is only $85.00 for Cultural Centre members or $95.00 for non-members.
