Wednesday evenings May 20, 27 and June 3 at 7 p.m.
This spring, spend your Wednesday evenings at the Chatham Cultural Centre learning about art masterpieces whilst sampling a beverage from the artist’s home country. We begin on May 20th with James McNeill Whistler’s Portrait of the Artist’s Mother. The actual title of this work is Arrangement in Grey and Black, but that wasn’t acceptable to the sensibilities at the time and the painting was re-titled in order to be accepted by the British Academy. On the second Wednesday we will discuss The Sunflowers painted by Vincent van Gogh. It is likely that van Gogh’s repeated use of the sunflower may have to do with the artist’s experimentation with newly available yellow pigments. The last work in this series will be The Kiss by Gustav Klimt. This work may have been influenced by the Byzantine murals he saw while visiting Italy, it utilizes gold leaf and is Klimt’s best known work of his ‘Golden Period’. Francoise Richard of the LCBO will be making the beverage selections for each evening, themed around the home country of the featured artist. This month will be the United States, the Netherlands and Austria. Please join us in Studio 1 at the Chatham Cultural Centre. for fibre artists! The cost is 25¢ payable at the door. What, you ask, is a fibre artist? A fibre artist works with natural or synthetic fibres; he may knit or crochet, she may work with collage, they may weave or dye material. At the Fibre Network night artisans will
bring their projects to work on, supplies to create artist trading cards will be available, ideas and techniques will be shared and artists will socialize while being productive. Located in the Region of Chatham-Kent, Tulip Tree Needlearts is a chapter of the
Embroiderersí Association of Canada www.eac.ca. The aim of the organization is to preserve traditional techniques and promote new challenges in the Art of Embroidery through education and networking. Meetings are the 4th Tuesday of every month. For information on meetings or classes please phone 519 674-5538 or 519 354-8590. Workshops are designed to offer members an opportunity to learn both new and advanced methods of needlework. Projects and Classes are ongoing throughout the year. Stitch-ins are held regularly in members homes throughout the region of Chatham-Kent. These offer an opportunity for members to share expertise and ideas. Tulip Tree Needlearts offers group and individual courses through the Embroiderersí Association of Canada. Membership is $50.00 and includes a subscription to the quarterly national magazine Embroidery Canada.

In another first for Theatre Kent, the group is pairing up with Wallceburg Little Theatre to do a run of their new show, a comedy by local author Karen Robinet, in Wallaceburg before playing Chathamπs Kiwanis Theatre. The Chatham-Kent Black Historical Society proudly presents the John Brown Festival and the Grand Opening of the BME Freedom Park and unveiling of the Mary Ann Shadd Cary bust, May 1-2, 2009 at the WISH Centre, 177 King St. E., Chatham, Ontario. Artis Lane, world-famous sculptress of the bust and former resident of Chatham will be in attendance to participate in the unveiling ceremony along with the Hon. Jean Augustine, first Fairness Commissioner for the Province of Ontario. The festival begins Friday afternoon with a free performance for our invited youth to witness the historical character of Harriet Tubman come to life through the engaging drama of talented performer, Leslie McCurdy. At 7:00 pm, a musical/vocal performance by “The Treble Makers”, directed by Jane Ripley, accompanied by Pat Kent on the keyboard and narration by Dr. Norman King will be presented and all are welcome to attend this free 60 minute performance. On Saturday, May 2nd we have two special guest speakers along with musical and drama performances as part of the day’s program. Morning speaker, Kevin Junor, Canadian Armed Forces Chief Warrant Officer is a recipient of the Order of Military Merit presented to him by Governor General Michaelle Jean in 2006. Our afternoon speaker is Karolyn Smardz Frost, York University Professor and author of “I’ve got a Home in Glory land”; story of Lucy and Thorton Blackburn. Karolyn is the recipient of the Governor General Award for Non-Fiction. We will also be entertained by soloist, Patricia Richardson-Williams and Dr. Susheel Bibbs will bring history alive with her presentation of “Meet Mary Pleasant. The Kiwanis Theatre is pleased to present a night of Egyptian dance on Saturday, May 2, 2009. In partnership with local dancers, 1001 Nights "Alf Leyla Wa Leyla" will take you on a journey back in time along the banks of the Nile River to ancient Egypt where Pharaohs ruled the land. Megan Robbins and Susu Abdo invite you to explore this mystifying and exotic culture through the ancient art of Egyptian belly dance. Experience the many styles of belly dance from regional belly artists and students. A themed dinner catered by William Street Cafè will be presented prior to the performance. Community leaders and neighbourhood residents will hold the Grand Opening of the BME Freedom Park – a project funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Chatham-Kent Council’s Community Partnership Fund, Canada Heritage, and other community partners. The opening will feature renowned sculptress and painter Artis Lane, a Chatham-Kent native, as well as representatives of the Chatham-Kent Black Historical Society, East Side Pride and the University of Guelph-Ridgetown, among others. One highlight of the ceremony will be the unveiling of a bronze sculpture of historical figure Mary Ann Shadd Cary. Cary was a famous anti-slavery activist, newspaper publisher, educator, lawyer and suffragette in both Canada and the United States during the second half of the 19th Century. From 1853 to 1863, she based her activities in Chatham. The sculpture has been funded by private donors. Citizens are invited to the Grand Opening on Saturday May 2, 2009, 4:30 p.m. at the corner of Wellington Street East and Princess Street in Chatham. A reception will follow at the nearby W.I.S.H. Centre.

The second annual Lambton-Kent Composite School Alumni and Friends Golf Tournament will be held at Country View Golf Course in Chatham. All former staff, students and administrators to participate! The tournament will consist of a four-person scramble. The $65 entry fee ($260 per foursome) includes 18 holes of golf, complete with a power cart and prizes. It also includes a post-tournament dinner and reception, to be held at the Lambton-Kent Memorial Arena. Community Living Chatham-Kent is hosting its second annual “Community Living Colours – Art Show” at the Chatham Public Library. The art show will present works done by more than 60 gifted artists who have an intellectual disability. During the exhibition, art pieces will be displayed (during Library hours of operation), artist biographies will be shared and there will be opportunities to win various pieces through draws.

The Thames Art Gallery presents High Class Art 2009, the 27th annual exhibition of art created by secondary school students of Chatham-Kent. The Gallery is pleased to host this exhibition, which represents some of the finest artwork produced this year by art students from secondary schools in the area. This display celebrates the achievements of many of Chatham-Kent’s young artists and the creative instruction and enthusiasm of our municipality’s art teachers. Featured in the exhibition are works representing a wide range of artistic media, including painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and mixed media. The Kiwanis Theatre is pleased to present the third annual CK Guitar Summit, a performance by some of the best guitar players from Chatham-Kent. The performance, led by veteran Chatham guitarist Tom Lockwood, will also feature the talents of Chris Rupert, Mike Schatte, Ray Whaling, Brian Allossery, Bob Hiltz, and Mark Wolfe. Returning from an extended Canadian tour with Sarnia harmonica player Mike Stevens, Lockwood says of the 2009 performance "I imagine this year’s event will "Rock Out" more in the second half than in past years". Organized by the Historic Downtown Chatham BIA, Retrofest offers hundreds of classic cars, food, and entertainment, as well as a whole new line-up of free fun for all ages. There’s also free bus service between events running on Saturday May 23rd to downtown Chatham, and on Sunday May 24th to Dukes Harley Davidson and RM Classic Cars. The bus will leave on the hour from the Union Gas parking lot at Keil Dr. from 10-5. Retrofest 2009 is offering free new attractions and inviting families to visit the "TD Canada Trust Pint Sized Fun Family Area" with an official Jeff Gordon NASCAR simulator. Families can ride the “toonie” Ferris wheel and have great fun with carnival games, entertainers, prizes, balloon animals and face painting.

On Friday May 22 everyone will enjoy the “OLG Classic Cruise Parade”, which will get under way at 7:00 PM. View hundreds of hot rods, classic vehicles and motorcycles as they cruise into downtown Chatham. Anyone with a vehicle who would like to take part in this free event can meet the organizers at the Union Gas parking lot at 50 Keil Drive North in Chatham, starting at 5:00 PM. A charity barbeque will be held nearby. After the cruise, bring your blanket or lawn chair and join us at 9:00 PM in Tecumseh Park for the free big screen showing of the movie Dirty Dancing.
On Saturday, May 23 see the Seventh Annual Retrofest Car Show from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM in downtown Chatham, sponsored by the Kent Historic Auto Club and featuring more than 600 vintage vehicles. Enjoy a wide variety of food and interactive entertainment all day long. There’s plenty of pint-sized fun for the kids – they can produce their own music videos and become “Retro Rock Stars”.
On Sunday, May 24 come out to Highway 40 and Highway 401 for a two-for-one admission to the RM Classic Car Exhibition. View automotive history with one of North America’s finest collections of classic cars. Help to celebrate Duke’s Harley Davidson’s fourth anniversary with a custom bike show, live entertainment, a charity cookout and more.

The Optimist Club of Chatham and the Municipality of Chatham-Kent Recreation Programs are set to host the 2nd Annual CK Youth Festival at Tecumseh Park in Chatham featuring an inflatable playground, local performers on the Kiwanis Stage, and interactive exhibits from groups all across Chatham-Kent showcasing their summer programs and camps. A Tribute to Hannah Montana will top the Main Stage acts at the event this year with a portrayal of Miley Cyrus & Hanna Montana that is nothing less than incredible. Interactive workshops will take place at the Chatham Cultural Centre. Children can participate in Taekwondo hosted by Sun’s Taekwondo and Bling Fling jewelry-making. Theatre Kent is looking for men and women age 14 and up for its production of Evita by Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice. A small childrenπs choir is required for one scene in the production as well. The Chatham-Kent Museum “Adventures under the Sea” summer camp is a great week long program to keep your kids active and occupied during those long summer months for children ranging from ages 5-9 (please see www.cktickets.com for dates and ages). At camp kids will learn about underwater life, be introduced to new sea creatures each day as well as learn about rivers and oceans and where to locate them on a map. Kids will have fun seeing and taking care of real live fish, and through arts and crafts, water activities, science experiments and games, they will be able to identify new things by the end of the week. Kids will have a blast on Environment Day as they learn about environmental dangers in the oceans, and how we can each make a difference to keep the planet safe! Early drop off is available in Studio One at 8:30am, and late pick up available until 4:30pm at Studio One for a small fee. The 5 day program runs from 9am until 4pm, and children will need to bring their own peanut-free snacks and lunches. Please dress appropriate for the weather as we will be spending some time each day outside. This week long program is only $85.00 for Cultural Centre members or $95.00 for non-members.
