This fall, we welcome back our popular Art and Wine evenings. Join us in Studio 1 of the Chatham Cultural Centre for fancy snacks and featured beverages. We begin on September 2nd with Johannes Vermeer’s The Art of Painting. On the second Wednesday, we will discuss The Battle of San Romano, painted by the Early Renaissance artist Paolo Ucello. September 16th will feature the seminal cubist work Les Demoiselles d’Avignon by Pablo Picasso. The last work in this series will be A Sunday on La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat. Please join us Wednesday evenings September 2, 9, 16 and 23 at 7 p.m. in Studio 1 at the Chatham Cultural Centre. Tickets are $10 per evening or $40 for all four evenings (with a membership discount available). ARTspace is pleased to announce that we will be hosting networking events
for fibre artists! The cost is 25¢ payable at the door. What, you ask, is a fibre artist? A fibre artist works with natural or synthetic fibres; he may knit or crochet, she may work with collage, they may weave or dye material. At the Fibre Network night artisans will
bring their projects to work on, supplies to create artist trading cards will be available, ideas and techniques will be shared and artists will socialize while being productive. Join the Wii Bowling League at the Wallaceburg Seniors’ Community Centre. No stairs to climb. This can be done sitting in a chair if you are unable to stand. A FUN SOCIAL 2 HOURS. All gaming equipment will be provided. No prior experience with the Wii console is necessary. The league – using the Wii electronic game console –will be composed of two-person teams. Teams do not have to attend every week, but will need to attend enough days to complete the league schedule. Teams will vie for the “Golden Shoes” Trophy . Located in the Region of Chatham-Kent, Tulip Tree Needlearts is a chapter of the
Embroiderersí Association of Canada www.eac.ca. The aim of the organization is to preserve traditional techniques and promote new challenges in the Art of Embroidery through education and networking. Meetings are the 4th Tuesday of every month. For information on meetings or classes please phone 519 674-5538 or 519 354-8590. Workshops are designed to offer members an opportunity to learn both new and advanced methods of needlework. Projects and Classes are ongoing throughout the year. Stitch-ins are held regularly in members homes throughout the region of Chatham-Kent. These offer an opportunity for members to share expertise and ideas. Tulip Tree Needlearts offers group and individual courses through the Embroiderersí Association of Canada. Membership is $50.00 and includes a subscription to the quarterly national magazine Embroidery Canada.

An exhibit by Helen Normandeau, entitled the MANDALA will take place at Artspace in Chatham. The word "mandala" is from the classical Indian language of Sanskrit, loosely translated to mean "circle" and represents wholeness. Helen works in a variety of media and art styles, but her favorite is abstract painting in the form of the Mandala, using gouache as her medium of choice. This combination enables her to best serve her artistic purpose which is to make the Sacred visible. This show will encompass two series of mandalas entitled Sacred Geometry and Chakra Colours. Helen was born in Windsor. She received an undergraduate degree in English Literature at University of Western Ontario, and a master’s degree in Textile Design at the University of Wisconsin. Though making art was something Helen did most of her life, she has only approached it seriously after retirement. She then launched herself into studies which took her to Detroit and Florida, to the Sadie Bronfman Centre in Montreal and the Montreal College of Art, to the internationally known artist Bill Porteous in Victoria, BC, and most recently to educational opportunities in Chatham, ON. Helen’s work can be found in galleries and private collections in Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia and several American cities. An artist’s reception will take place on September 3rd @ 7 pm at ARTspace. The exhibit will also include work by ARTspace exhibiting members; local artists whose work has been chosen by the ARTspace selection committee. ARTspace is a gallery featuring artwork for sale created by Chatham-Kent artists. ARTspace is located at 165Ω King Street in downtown Chatham, Ontario. ARTspace is open 12-5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The Terry Fox Run takes place today in Wallaceburg and participants will have the option to follow a 2km, 5km or 10 km route. The fundraiser begins at noon in Wallaceburg’s Civic Park. Please don’t let the name fool you; the “run” is also open to walkers, bike riders, and skateboarders. The Chatham Kent Women’s Centre is hosting a very exciting event and we need MEN to walk. We’re here to tell the world that men can help put an end to violence. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®: The International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault & Gender Violence asks men to literally walk one mile in women’s shoes while raising funds and awareness for the Chatham Kent Women’s Centre. The entire community is invited to participate – men, women and children. Pre registration is required for the male walker to receive his own pair of high heeled shoes. Registration and additional pledges will also be accepted the morning of the walk, however shoe availability cannot be guaranteed. Team sponsors are encouraged. The Chatham-Kent Museum will be featuring Brian Lindsay of the Dundurn Castle Brewery at its first lecture of the fall season. Brian Lindsay works at the National Historic Site were he has been able to hone craft and has produced many traditional ales, lagers and fruit beers which have been well received. On this night he will discuss the history of beer and brewing in Ontario and its importance in daily lives with an emphasis on the mid-nineteenth century. During the beer tasting he will highlight locally produced beers from Ontario. Apricot Wheat Ale, Coffee Porter, and Cream Ale are some of the eight types of beer that will be sampled. Students will learn basic figure drawing skills using different types of charcoal, paper and other tools. Auditions will be held on at the Theatre Kent building on Stanley Avenue in Chatham (beside the former Victoria Residence) for A Christmas Story. Director Karen Robinet is looking for boys and girls aged six and up, as well as adults to perform in the production. A Christmas Story is based on the short stories and anecdotes of author Jean Shepherd and was inspired by the 1983 film of the same name. “The story revolves around nine-year-old Ralphie, whose one dream is receive a Red Ryder air rifle,” says Robinet, adding that, “Ralphie is the main character in the play and so itπs crucial to find a local boy who is willing and able to take on the role.” As well as Ralphie, other childrenπs roles include a younger brother and an assortment of bullies, friends and classmates. Adult roles include his parents, and the adult Ralph, who serves as the storyπs narrator. There are also several more minor roles. The show will be performed in the Kiwanis Theatre at the Chatham Cultural Centre on December 11, and December 12, with both a matinee and evening performance on the 12th.

Nobuo Kubota is known not only as a visual artist but also as a musician and sound performer. Kubotaπs work is best described as unidisciplinary, not in the sense of any for of art, but in the sense of bringing together many forms of art into a single, coherent experience that often encompasses architecture, sound, and visuals. The opening reception for his installation, Hokusai Revisited, will take place on September 17th, 7pm at the Thames Art Gallery where Nobuo Kubota will be on hand to speak about his work. This exhibition is organized and circulated by the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Oshawa, in collaboration with the Art Gallery of Peterborough, Thames Art Gallery and Kelowna Art Gallery.

The Ridgetown Rotary Club, presents the "End Polio Now" concert to raise funds to help Rotary International eradicate polio worldwide. All of you blues fans will recognize "South West Blues Review", a well-known group of local musicians. To give the concert some outstanding variety, the "Chatham-Kent Mountaineers" has agreed to participate. They(6) are all local musicians, with a faithful following, playing celtic-foot-stomping tunes. The location is a newly constructed pole-barn on the farm of Neil & Robin Rose & family, 11977 Rose Beach Line, between Morpeth and Rondeau Park. Come rain, wind, bugs, or heat, everyone will be comfortable. Bring a lawn chair, enjoy the music, and help "End Polio Now". The Wallaceburg and District Museum is proud to announce a new program that will have you saying WOW! In partnership with the Chatham-Kent Municipal Youth Council and the Wallaceburg Youth Committee; the Wallaceburg and District Museum will be presenting a monthly movie night that will feature movies that are not yet released on DVD. Join us on tonight for “Night at the Museum: Battle at the Smithsonian”. The museum will be open at 6:00 pm so come early and take part in the Mystery Treasure Hunt. This extraordinary night offers visitors who usually cannot visit during the day to come in and learn interesting facts about the town of Wallaceburg. The movie screening will be held in our Jeanne Gordon theatre named after Wallaceburgπs very own famous opera singer. Admission is by donation and/or by giving non-perishable food. On September 20-22 a British gentleman by the name of Dr. Colin Skinner, will be passing through Chatham-Kent with just a backpack and his hiking boots. He is trekking across the United States and part of Canada to help raise funds and awareness for Hospices across North America. This is his second visit and on this visit he will be showing a slideshow of his last trek (which includes Chatham-Kent) and promoting his book. Proceeds will go towards local hospice programs. VON is hosting a meet and greet on September 21st at the Retro Suites Hotel on King St. at 7pm and we would like to extend this invitation to you to come and meet with him to learn more about his quest to help Hospices around the world. As mentioned in his book on his last visit he passed through Thamesville and up Highway 2 (Longwoods Rd.)and was greeted by VON volunteers. Don’t be bored on your very first P.A. Day of the new school year! Learn the process of reductive printmaking using soft cut linoleum to create multi-coloured original prints. Use found objects and things from nature to create even more prints using the Gallery printing press. Children will also work with acrylic paint on stretched canvas and learn the art of still life painting. Early drop off of 8:30am and late pick up of 4:30pm is available. As part of the Chatham-Kent Museum’s festival MummyFest, the Kiwanis Theatre will be showing the 1932 film classic, The Mummy, starring Boris Karloff. Also showing will be The Mummy’s Hand (1940), The Mummy’s Tomb (1942), The Mummy’s Ghost (1944), and The Mummy’s Curse (1944). These movies are the landmark films that inspired an entire genre of movies and continue to be major influences on motion pictures to this day. MummyFest, a day-long celebration hosted by the Chatham-Kent Museum, will also feature mummy-themed fun in Studio One. There will be an out-of-town ‘guest’ mummy on display, as well as mummy-themed merchandise, reconstruction casts and other sculptures. The original Olympic flame will be travelling from Athens, Greece and making its journey across Canada, in an effort to “light the land, generate pride in our nation, and celebrate the possible!” The Olympic flame will be passing through a number of Chatham-Kent communities over a three day period, and will be stopping overnight for a very special “cauldron lighting” ceremony in Chatham on December 22, 2009. To celebrate this historic moment, the municipality will be hosting a free full-day event to showcase, honour, and celebrate our community’s cultural diversity, heritage, local accomplishments, and community champions.
