Three homes and a historic church are on the itinerary for the Christmas in Shetland Home Tour in this tiny, picturesque farming community in south Lambton. As an added draw, the church hall will be the setting for a Christmas Bazaar and Tea Room. Three homes, all connected with the Elliott family, will be featured on the tour.  The oldest is a third generation family farm home, built in 1878 and recently renovated.  The newest was built in 1986.  All are within a few kilometres of the Shetland United Church, built in 1882, which will be decorated for a Christmas wedding. Across the road from the church, the Shetland Hall will be bursting at the seams with a Christmas Bazaar, featuring unique Christmas shopping opportunities including home décor, homemade Christmas cards, baking, wreaths, books, and other crafts. Also at the hall, visitors can enjoy a tea room with soups, breads, and baking – as well as tea and other beverages. Admission is $12 per person. For tickets or more information, contact Joyce at 519-692-5106.  Tickets can also be purchased on the day of the event at the Shetland Hall, 1293 Shetland Road in Dawn-Euphemia township. Inspired by the wildly popular Radio City Christmas Spectacular in New York City, the PURE Academy for the Performing Arts has prepared a PURE Christmas Spectacular for the Kiwanis Theatre that is set to begin a new holiday tradition for families in Chatham-Kent. Showcasing the amazing talent of local young performers, the PURE Christmas Spectacular will bring to life many best-loved Christmas stories through dance, singing, acting and musical theatre. Highlights include a suite from the Nutcracker ballet, lively Rockette-style numbers, theatrical show-stoppers and songs the whole family will love! To order tickets call PURE at 519-352-5000.

The original Olympic flame will be travelling from Athens, Greece and making its journey across Canada, in an effort to “light the land, generate pride in our nation, and celebrate the possible!”  The Olympic flame will be passing through a number of Chatham-Kent communities over a three day period, and will be stopping overnight for a very special “cauldron lighting” ceremony in Chatham on December 22, 2009.  To celebrate this historic moment, the municipality will be hosting a free full-day event to showcase, honour, and celebrate our community’s cultural diversity, heritage, local accomplishments, and community champions. Taking place at the Kinsmen Auditorium and Memorial Arena, from 12 p.m. until approximately 10:30 p.m., this event includes a full day of free family activities, performances, art demonstrations, and sporting events.
