The gallery at the Ridge House Museum in Ridgetown will be featuring an exhibit by local dairy farmer, Rudy Zubler. Rudy Zubler: Swamp Meets is a collection of candid scenes of life in his neighbourhood swamp. Born in Aarau, Switzerland and educated in agriculture from the Agricultural Institute of Grangeneuve in Switzerland, Rudy manages and owns Zubler Farms, a 90-cow dairy farm in South Kent. His interest in nature started at a young age and he purchased his first camera at the age of 16. Teaching himself through reading and observation of masters such as Ernst Hass, Hannu Hautala, and Shinzo Maeda, Rudy has exhibited in art galleries in his native Switzerland and throughout Ontario. Swamp Meets will run from March 19 to May 31, 2011, with the artist’s reception taking place on March 19 from 2pm – 4pm. The Museum will be open daily from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. from March 19th to September 23rd.

May 6 to June 5
The Thames Art Gallery will be exhibiting a selection of works from the permanent collection by artist Hortense Mattice Gordon. Hortense was a Canadian painter born in Hamilton in 1887. She has a direct connection to Chatham-Kent, where she lived as a teenager. Hortense took up residence with her paternal aunt and uncle, Mary Anne (Mattice) and Leslie English, on their 200 - acre fruit farm at Ridgetown. Art instruction and teaching work were both available in nearby Chatham. Hortense remained in Ridgetown from 1903 until approximately 1918. Shortly after moving to Ridgetown, Hortense began studying painting and china decoration with Mother Mary Clare Gaukler, then school principal at Chatham's Ursuline convent. Studying with Mother Clare, Hortense demonstrated early aptitude. China - painting was an honoured and marketable female skill, and Hortense lost no time in taking advantage of its popularity. She rented a studio in Chatham, installed a kiln in the farmhouse, offered lessons in the neighbourhood, and participated in exhibitions with other artists from the area such as W. St. Thomas Smith, ARCA (1862 - 1947) and A.M. Fleming (1875 – 1929).
The Thames Art Gallery’s permanent collection houses some rare and intimate items which will be incorporated into the exhibition, such as Hortense’s sketch books, photographs, collected post cards, hand-written place setting cards and painted ceramics. Perhaps most impressive is the collection of works produced by Hortense. The Thames Art Gallery has a significant number of these works – a selection of which will be on display. The Art Gallery is open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. daily and admission is FREE! High Class Art exhibit is on display during this time as well.

Ania Czerwieniec received a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Education from the University of Windsor. She has exhibited in shows throughout Chatham-Kent. She is a full-time ceramic artist and teaches courses at the Thames Art Gallery. Cornelius Peet was a member of the Chatham-Kent Art Association during the 60’s and 70’s and many of his pieces are in private collections throughout Canada. May is Sexual Assault Awareness Month in the Province of Ontario and the Drama Students from Walkerville Collegiate in Windsor, under the direction of Mr. John Nabben, will be joining the Chatham-Kent Sexual Assault Crisis Centre (CKSACC) to help bring greater awareness about the lifelong impact of childhood sexual abuse. Recently adjudicated by Helen Zredulik, she explains, “The Shape of Sarah is an original play inspired by the 1985 Air India Flight 182, the 1949 Pacific Airlines Explosion and the Luggage at Nakarita Airport.   Its underlying themes deal with child abuse, forgiveness and family dynamics.  The set is unlike anything I have ever seen before; it is made up of actors who literally shape the next location.  There is a breathtaking plane explosion scene and an unforgettable ending”. John Nabben and his students generously made their performance of the play available to sexual assault centres in the west region and the Chatham-Kent Sexual Assault Crisis Centre was pleased to accept their kind offer as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The Shape of Sarah will be performed at the Chatham Cultural Centre Kiwanis Theatre. A minimum donation of $5.00 at the door is requested. A tax receipt will be available for contributions of $20.00 or more. For more information please contact: Chatham-Kent Sexual Assault Crisis Centre 519-354-8908

We encourage you to come dressed to impress in your best manga outfit and meet us at 6pm at our first destination – ARTspace! At 6pm we will say kan-ichi-wa at ARTspace as we celebrate the opening of Nature Studies an exhibition featuring Ania Czerwieniec, ceramic artist, and Cornelis Peet, acrylic painter. This exhibition explores both two and three-dimensional works that have been brought together through the symbiotic relationship of nature and animal. At 7pm the group will conquer King Street in true comic book fashion and stop in to Eve Chocolatier and the William Street Café for Japanese inspired snacks, sweets and refreshing drinks! For 8pm join everyone at the Thames Art Gallery for the opening reception of Systems Check and community arts initiative and exhibition Non-representational Painting! The artists brought together in Systems Check, Paul Dignan, Angela Leach, Lowell Bradshaw, Ingrid Calame and Mathew Bushell have each developed unique methodologies that blend the objective and subjective, fact with fiction, chance and with intention. Each artist has their own idiosyncratic procedural approach for making work that resonates with the history of abstraction while challenging expectations. The evening will continue in Studio 1 with Bob’s Rockabilly band, Dance Dance Revolution and sushi!
