The Thames Art Gallery opens new exhibition "This is for the birds." Maureen Newton’s recent oil paintings are characterized by rich colouration, bold compositions, and gently humorous depictions of life’s serious – and not so serious – situations. Portraying a sweep of experiences from harrowing exploits in the countryside to the foibles of modern relationships and courting behaviour, Newton’s recent works show her affinity for the telling moment in a story and her ability to sympathetically reveal personality in her portraits of man, woman, beast and bird. Maureen Newton’s vision is a realistic and humane one, in which all beings have access to comedy and to grace.
Maureen Newton was born and raised in Medicine Hat, Alberta, and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Great Distinction in Painting and Printmaking from the University of Lethbridge in 1986. She has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions over the past twenty years in Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario. Her work is held in the collections of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre as well as in numerous private collections. This exhibition opens in the mezzanine gallery of the Thames Art Gallery on January 13, 2012 and will run until February 12, 2012. The Thames Art Gallery is open 7-days a week from 1-5pm.

As part of Black History month, ARTspace has partnered with the Buxton National Historic Site and Museum to showcase Stitching Community: African Canadian Quilts from Southern Ontario. This exhibition was previously featured at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto and will showcase both quilts and dolls made by Black women from 1848 to 1976. African Canadian quilting emerged in the decades preceding Confederation. Enslaved Black women were used for spinning, weaving, sewing, and quilting on American plantations. When the first generation of fugitive slave women arrived in Canada -- the “land of freedom” -- in the 1840s, they brought with them the skills and talents they too would pass down to their children. This exhibition will be on display at ARTspace from January 25 – March 3, 2012 with an opening reception on Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 7pm with opening remarks by Shannon Prince.

FOUR CULTURES…FOUR RHYTHMS…ONE HEART, DRUM! At the Chatham Capitol Theatre. DRUM! is Nova Scotia's spectacular new musical production featuring 20 musicians, dancers, drummers, and singers from four of the principle cultures - Black, Acadian, Aboriginal, and Celtic - brought together in a heart-pumping fusion of music, dance, poetry, video, rhythm, and song. “It's part Riverdance, part Stomp! And while it has components of both of these international smash hits (fiddling and dancing from the former, percussion and dancing from the latter) Drum! manages to establish its own identity as a performance piece born of rich cultural traditions, driven by youthful energy, and sustained by audiences that can't seem to get enough of this sort of thing. Drum! is performed at the quick pace this type of show requires. The tone throughout is decidedly upbeat, if you'll pardon the expression, and while there are a few sombre and reflective moments, the mood is mostly festive and celebratory. The operative word here is "variety," and it applies to everything from instruments to costumes to the material itself, where the range extends from Aboriginal powwow chanting, to Highland dancing, to Acadian fiddling, to Negro spirituals. There are some surprising and very pleasant crossovers as well. At times Drum! makes you think of Loreena McKennitt; at other times it's positively Great Big Sea. There is even some percussion work that sounds suspiciously like industrial music. The only constant is the drum. “ - Nick Miliokas, The Leader-Post. DRUM! will be at the Chatham Capitol Theatre on Friday, March 2, 2012 at 7pm. Tickets are $30 - $40 plus HST and facility fees. To book your seats. Call 1-866-807-7770/519-354-8338, come in to the box office at 75 William Street North in Chatham, or log on to www.cktickets.com. For more information, www.chathamcapitoltheatre.com or http://gmartists.com/drum.htm

For over sixty-five years the Chatham-Kent Museum has collected the history, and artifacts of our Municipality. Many of the artifacts pertain to local stories and facts, but on occasion, the story an artifact has to tell relates to a greater world history. Within the museum’s vast collection is one such item, a third class menu card from April 14, 1912. On April 14, 2012 the museum will be honouring the 100th anniversary and remembering the lives of those that made the maiden voyage either as passenger or crew on the Titanic. The special dinner will be held at the Chatham Armouries, and it will re-create many of the dishes served for first and third class passengers aboard the luxury liner. As an added feature, the museum will be exhibiting its authentic third class menu card. During a similar dinner in 1999, the card was last shown to the Chatham-Kent public. It was then loaned to the Canadian Museum of Civilization for an exhibition. The menu will only be shown again to the public the night of the dinner in 2012. More details about the dinner will be made public in the near future. This is a unique experience that the Chatham-Kent Museum will be providing and showcases one many of the unique treasures found in our local museums. Watch www.theculturalcentre.com for the latest information.
