CLASS ACTI've only been to Montreal two or three times but every time I've been there I've been treated well by everyone I've had dealings with even though I have heard many horror stories to the contrary. I guess the basis for the horror stories starts at the Bell Centre in Montreal as a bunch of loser fans booed the US National Anthem.
The most storied franchise in hockey history felt the embarrassment last week when their fans showed no class while trying to make a political statement. I've got news for you – If you want to make a political statement then go to the Academy Awards or a Dixie Chicks concert because there is no room for that at an NHL Hockey game.
It was heartwarming to fans in Toronto cheer loudly for the Star Spangled Banner on Saturday. I don't always agree with Don Cherry but on Saturday's coach's corner he hit it right on the head. If you didn't see it then you missed it because Grapes, as usual, was wearing his feelings on his sleeve and they echoed many opinions that I've heard around about the Iraqi affair.
SET UP MAN DREW
Plymouth Whalers goaltender Paul Drew is starting to get into the act as a playmaker. If there is such a thing as an offensive goaltender then he fits the bill. Drew has three assists in two games in the Whalers playoff series with the Owen Sound Attack. Some forwards on both teams don't have three points in the series. Drew led the OHL in goals against with a 2.49 GAA this season and had a .911 save percentage.
BACK -TO-BACK
The Dresden Bantams have had a remarkable two year run and capped off another successful season on the weekend with their second OMHA title. The same group of kids won the OMHA Pee Wee title last year. It's special to win but even more so to win back-to-back titles. I'm very proud to say that my brother is the coach of the team and my nephew plays for the team but am also proud to know each and every one of the kids and coaches on this Bantam team. They are all classy young men that have worked very hard to attain a common goal. They are not only winners on the ice but off the ice as well.
WALLIS ARMED AND DANGEROUS
Harness driver Kevin Wallis is back with a vengence and can now be classified as armed and dangerous. Wallis was involved in an accident a Pompano Park Harness track last November and was out of action until the last week in February with a broken elbow. He sent notice this past weekend that he is back in form. Last Friday night, he won one race, was second five times and was third twice in 11 races. Saturday night, Wallis had four winners, three seconds and one third place finish in 11 starts to show that he is fully healed and ready for action. Wallis also had a small tear in his right rotator cuff that healed while he was off with his elbow injury. Wallis will be back in Southwestern Ontario in May ready for action at Windsor Raceway, Dresden Raceway and Hazel Park in Detroit. Wallis has been in the top ten in wins in North America for ten of the twelve past years.
