Chatham Kent athletes doing well

Wednesday, December 4, 2002

Myriah Heinhaus and Tricia Pray received their due last week as readers got to catch up on what they were doing in the world of hockey in the USA.
Chatham Kent also has several young men following their athletic dreams in the states as well. Wallaceburg's Shaun Suisham is kicking up a storm at Bowling Green University in Bowling Green, Ohio. The six-foot, 200lb, kicker was 12-14 on field goal attempts in the Mid-American Conference.
The former WDSS student was a perfect 6-6 in field goals under 29 yards and made four of six from between 30-39 yards. Suisham connected on two forty-plus yard field goals including his season long 43-yarder. The Falcons were 9-3 on the season and were ranked in the top 25 in the NCAA. The Junior kicker was the second highest scorer on the team with 93 points. Suisham is the son of Rick and Wendy Suisham of Wallaceburg.
Three former Maroons are also doing well on the ice as Daryl Green, Tim Vitek and Paul Drew. Green is a Sr blueliner for the Univeristy of Massachusetts and has been described by his coach as a "tough, gritty defender that loves to play against the best and always rises to the occassion"
The six-foot 200lb, Green has two goals and six assists in 11 games this year for the U-Mass (Lowell) River Hawks. In his time with the River Hawks Green has logged 70 games with eight goals and 24 assists. The former Maroon still sports #20 and is the son of Ken and Judy Green. The River Hawks have a record of four wins, seven losses and one overtime loss.
Tim Vitek is also at U-Mass except at the Amherst Campus. The speedy Vitek is 5'10"and weighs in at 170lbs. This season Vitek has one goal and three assists in 11 games for the Minutemen. His coaches say that Vitek "is eager to learn and is a definite asset to their hockey team as a player and a person." Vitek also wears #20 and is the son of Don and Deb Vitek of Dresden. The Minutemen are 8-5 with two overtime losses.
Former Maroon Paul Drew is seeing lots of rubber this season with the Plymouth Whalers of the OHL. Drew is the son of Glen and Chris Drew of Merlin. The former Maroon has played 20 games for the Whalers this year and carries a goals against average of 2.53 and a save percentage of .901. Drew has chalked up two shut-outs this year and has a record of 11-4-3. The 5'10"190 lbs netminder was picked up in the second round by the Whalers in the 1999 draft.
Drew's Whalers have 17 wins, six losses, three ties and one overtime loss this season in which he has logged in 1115 minutes of playing time.
Chatham Kent has been offering players to the US ranks for years and will continue to do so showing our main export is always crops or auto parts.
