NFL MARKETING IS THE BEST

Tuesday, January 31, 2006

The Super Bowl is all set for this Sunday at Ford Field in Detroit and it will be amazing. I know that many people stay away from Detroit for various reasons but they are missing out. NFL football fans will see what Detroit has to offer this week and it will be nothing short of spectacular.

I make regular trips to the Motor City for different reasons, maybe a Wings game, a Tigers game, a Lions game or just dinner. I love Detroit. The architecture of the city and the ease with which it can be navigated are just two things that I like about Detroit.

When the NFL awarded the Super Bowl to Detroit they gave the city a new lease on life.

The city has been reeling in debt but will get a huge shot in the arm this week. A $300 million dollar new lease. For one week the city of Detroit and Windsor will be swamped with people of all walks of life from multi-million dollar entertainers all the way to common street hookers. They are all coming for the Super Bowl.

NFL Marketing is totally responsible for that huge influx of cash and people. Over 30 years of preening and tweaking has brought the Super Bowl to what it is --- an entertainment spectacle. To prove my point I will first of all say that it is the prime meridian of advertising.

Millions and millions of dollars are spent in advertising and if you want to buy a 30 second spot get your cheque book. One thirty second spot can run you as much as $1.5 million so it had better have some impact. The big boys step up every year to to get their ads as the credit card companies, the car companies, pop peddlers and the beer companies join in the competition to see who can come up with the best spot.

These companies plan their whole marketing campaigns around the Super Bowl because they know it's worth it. Hundreds of marketing geniuses can't be wrong.
Second and final point. People that don't know the difference between a
football and a foot rub tune in to the Super Bowl. They want to see the half time
entertainment.

Performers are salivating over the chance to perform at the Super Bowl. They don't care whether it's the halftime show, the post-game show, the pre-game show, the pre-pre-game Super Bowl party or the pre-pre-pre Super Bowl Party. The exposure to the most watched event in North America is almost priceless.

One event, One day and one big party. The Super Bowl.

Oh yeah, there's a game too. Steelers 36 Seattle 31.
