A little history About Salba
Salba cultivated from Salvia hispanica L.
This was used in the diets of humans for hundreds of years. The remarkably advanced Aztec nation cultivated Salvia hispanica L. which they called Chia, as one of their nutritional foundations. They referred to Chia as "Running Food" because it provided extraordinary energy and power. Chia was to the Aztecs what Ginseng is to the Orient: the nutritional secret for restoring vigor and prolonging life.
What is Salba?
Salba is the only grain that holds a medical patent. (60-274.256) This invention is in the field of the management of diabetes and is concerned with dietary approaches to such management, more particularly, it is concerned with methods of improving associated metabolic abnormalities, specifically with Salba., and methods of use in these seeds in lowering blood pressure, blood glucose and post-prandial glycemia, as well as associated risk factors such as inflammatory factors.
A randomized, single blind clinical study was conducted in 2000/01. Twenty one patients with Type 2 Diabetes completed a long-term study in which they were randomly assigned to receive the American Diabetic Association Diet in addition to either 50 g/day of Salba, or an equivalent amount of control cereals matched for energy, fiber and protein. Each study phase lasted 3 months, separated with a minimum 4 week washout period. Based on the significant results achieved in comparison to the control diet, the following health applications could be indicated for Salba:
Salba is the richest whole food source of Omega-3 fatty acids and fiber found in nature
