Perf Egg food?
Tuesday, July 10, 2007
Eggs are given a bad rap because of the fats in the yolk which supposedly increase your blood cholesterol – Wrong!!!! Do your research and you will find they have never conclusively or for that matter remotely shown that eggs increase bad cholesterol or blood cholesterol!Your body produces all the cholesterol it needs. Most of the cholesterol found in the blood and tissues come from this internal synthesis. However, dietary excesses –too many calories, too much fat and saturated fat and high intakes of cholesterol may increase the level in the blood. Saturated fat has the greatest influence on raising blood cholesterol.
Dietary cholesterol, found in all foods from animals, does not automatically raise blood cholesterol levels. Generally the body compensates for dietary cholesterol by synthesizing smaller amounts in the liver, by excreting more or by absorbing less.
Elevated blood cholesterol does increase the risk of heart disease.
Evidence showing that eating a lot of dietary cholesterol doesn't increase blood cholesterol was discovered during a statistical analysis conducted over 25 years by Dr. Wanda Howell and colleagues at the University of Arizona.
As a matter of fact some studies have also shown that levels of HDL, the "good" blood cholesterol, increased when subjects ate egg-supplemented diets.
A study done in 1994:
Schnohr et al. 1994. Egg consumption and high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol. J. Intern. Med. 235:249-251.
To determine the effects of egg consumption on plasma HDL cholesterol levels, twenty-four adults added two eggs per day to their usual diets for six weeks. Total cholesterol levels were increased by 4% while HDL cholesterol levels increased 10%.
HDL = High-density lipoproteins (HDL) form a class of lipoproteins that carry cholesterol from the body's tissues to the liver. About thirty percent of blood cholesterol is carried by HDL.
It is said that HDL can remove cholesterol from atheroma (an accumulation and swelling in arteries and transport it back to the liver for excretion or re-utilization – which is the main reason why HDL-bound cholesterol is called "good cholesterol"
Eggs are packed with a range of nutrients including protein, essential vitamins A, D, E, and B group as well as minerals iron, phosphorus and zinc. They're relatively low in saturated fat, making them a healthy fast food for all the family. They're low in calories with only around 80 kcals per medium egg - so they are great if you're on a diet!
Eggs are one of the most nutritious foods money can buy. They contain a wealth of vitamins, minerals and protein. In particular, they are an excellent source of B vitamins that perform many vital functions in the body. Eggs also provide good quantities of vitamin A – essential for normal growth and development. Vitamin E gives protection against heart disease and some cancers. Vitamin D is also present to provide mineral absorption and good bone health.
Eggs are rich in essential minerals, in particular iodine, required for making thyroid hormones and phosphorus, essential for healthy teeth and bones. Trace elements are also present in eggs, including iron to help with red blood cell formation and zinc, for improved immunity.
Eggs are a great source of choline. Research shows that if you don't have enough choline during pregnancy, the brain doesn't develop normally and babies are born either with defective memory or lower memory capabilities that lasts throughout their lives. Giving choline in utero has been shown to lead to better than average memory for life.
Just like fruit and vegetables, eggs contain powerful antioxidants such as selenium. As the name suggests, antioxidants work by protecting the body against the inevitable damage caused by the process by which the body metabolises oxygen. Antioxidants are important in protecting against diseases such as heart disease and some cancers.
Eggs have a biological value (efficacy with which protein is used for growth) of 93.7%. Comparable values are 84.5% for milk, 76% for fish, and 74.3% for beef. Eggs really are the best protein money can buy, and it has all those other valuable vitamins and minerals too.
With so much nutritional goodness itís no wonder the EGG deserves the title superfood!
In my humble opinion I believe the egg should be a staple of everyone's daily nutrition.
