Simple but Powerful amino acid Glycine!
Tuesday, October 16, 2007
It is one of the 20 amino acids commonly found in proteins – It is not one of the 9 essential but is a conditional amino.Glycine is a unique amino cid. Most proteins contain only small quantities of glycine. A notable exception is collagen(main protein of connective tissue), which contains about 35% glycine.Glycine is a building block to numerous natural products.
Although most glycine is found in proteins, free glycine is found in body fluids as well as in plants. The normal diet contributes approximately 2 grams of glycine daily.
Research
Glycine has also been shown to act as an inhibitory neurotransmitter. This means it has a calming effect on the brain. Necessary for central nervous system function, this abundant amino acid has also been used in the treatment of bipolar disorder, hyperactivity, and epilepsy.
High-dose glycine may be beneficial in the management of enduring negative symptoms of schizophrenia.
Glycine first attracted interest in the medical research community for its reputed ability to dampen reflex excitability in the Central Nervous System . The dose used was 1 gram daily for six months to a year. All patients noted some benefits, and no adverse events were recorded.
Glycine, has been studied for its ability to inhibit gastric secretion and to protect the gastric mucosa(mucous membrane layer of the stomach) against chemically and stress-induced ulcers. Because the prostate contains considerable amounts of glycine, this nutrient may help promote prostate health. One study found that glycine, taken with alanine and glutamic acid, reduced the amount of swelling in the prostate tissue.
In laboratory experiments, scientists demonstrated that glycine acted alone to reduce H. pylori infection.
Exercise and Glycine
Active people have found glycine, as part of a balanced amino acid formula, may help slow muscle-tissue breakdown and promote healing after intense workouts. Shown to both promote growth-hormone release and enhance cell volumizing, it appears to encourage muscle building and strength gains.
During rapid growth phases, the body demands even more glycine. And some studies have indicated that glycine causes an increase in strength, perhaps attributable to its effects on growth-hormone levels and/or cell volume.
All in all free form Glycine is a powerhouse which teams up with almost every other function in the human body.
