Nature Link
EASTER WEEKEND
Tuesday, April 14, 2009
It was nice and sunny this past holiday weekend, but cold. The usual prevailing NE spring winds did not fail. A few new birds have arrived, but not many. No doubt they are being held back a bit due to the cold spring.Wildflowers are just starting to appear. I saw some Coltsfoot on Rondeau's marsh trail on Good Friday. Dutchman's Breeches are getting close to flowering and violets are already out.
Some new birds this past weekend included Purple Martin, Barn Swallow, Forster's Tern, Savannah Sparrow, Vesper Sparrow and Great Egret. There are still lots of ducks around.
Some birds are already nesting, such as the noisy Canada Geese at the Blenheim Lagoons. Ducks are plentiful there too, especially Ruddy.
Many of the winter feeder birds are still sticking around including the ones at Rondeau's visitor centre. Pine Siskins are still plentiful as well.
Since new birds were rather few this past week, Nature Link is short. This coming weekend will bring in some new migrants!
