THE COUNTS ARE ON

Wednesday, July 2, 2008

As this bizarre weather continues, one gets out during the brief sunny breaks to check the outdoors.

Last week was interesting checking on the Southern Hairstreaks. I saw up to ten one day. Other species of hairstreaks have emerged including Banded, Hickory, Edwards and Coral. There were incredible numbers this past weekend of especially Banded and Hickory.

On Sunday it was just amazing the number of hairstreaks that were out in the afternoon once it warmed up with the sun. Any spot that milkweed was in bloom, you could find many hairstreaks. They are certainly neat little butterflies with each specie having its own design.

The Pinery/Port Franks butterfly count was held this past Saturday. It was disappointing to say the least. It was raining as soon as we got there, but by noon the sun came out. I guess it was too late as we hardly saw any butterflies. I have not heard the final tally, but it will be low. I do know an Acadian Hairstreak was found.

On the way home I stopped at Reid CA and saw more butterflies there than at Pinery! That place is amazing really. I will be monitoring it throughout the summer.

The next count is Skunk's Misery on July 6. We meet at Newbury at 08:30. It is always an interesting count.
