NATURE BLINK
Tuesday, September 30, 2008
Just a short Nature Link this week, hence the title! Short because it is getting late and I did not find much to write about this week. The weather was less than ideal this past weekend. As usual, the forecast was inaccurate, spoiling my hopes. I was hoping for a good north wind to try for pelagics at Point Edward. It was predicted all week, but by the time came, it was negligible.
Anyway, at Rondeau several warblers were seen in the drizzle, including a large number of Black-throated Blue among the fifteen species. Most notable was a late Hooded Warbler.
Kinglets have been increasing in numbers. Sparrows have yet to show any significant number, but I think the cool weather this week will bring lots in.
A good number of shorebirds were at Blenheim constituting about 13 species. Long-billed Dowitchers were included.
Butterflies are still in the news. I found a Snout at Reid CA, albeit very worn, as shown in the photo. It was at least the 46th species I have found there this summer.
Noteworthy was another White-M Hairstreak at Point Pelee, just outside the park found by Steve Pike. The previous week Common Checkered Skippers were located there. This is a very rare species for Ontario. I have not seen one yet!
The photo shows the White-M Hairstreak I found on Pelee Island this summer.
