Legion Musing
Educating the children......
Tuesday, September 1, 2009
As I said in the last column Sept is here and with it the start up of school. I wish to invite all schools to contact us at the Legion if you wish to have a Veteran come and speak at your school. Not just around Nov 11th , but at anytime of the school year. The message we bring is that war is bad, but sometimes we are called to defend the weak or our own country. I have over the last 3 years been asked to speak to the children. I as a Veteran find it rewarding to speak to them and from the youngest to the oldest, I have heard and answered many interesting questions. I invite youth clubs, scouts, guides and church youth groups to contact me. This is a project I feel is important to dispel the misconception that war is glorious or glamorous.I would also ask any Veterans who wish to take part in these visits to contact me. I will say to you that you do not have to answer any question that you are not comfortable with. I do my best to shield other Veterans from questions they are not comfortable or not ready to answer yet.
We are holding a Battle of Britain Ceremony at the Cenotaph on Sunday Sept 13th at 12:00pm. Please, Legion members and the public come. Legion members, if you do not have blues and greys come out anyway. Also to the Ladies Auxiliary you are always more than welcome to join us. So when you see me speak of an upcoming ceremony you are at the same time invited.
Events: Sept 14th Executive meeting at 6:30 pm followed by the general meeting at 7:30 pm. Please make an effort to attend. We need you there. Legion week is coming. Sept 20th to 26th starting with a Drumhead service in Thamesville on the 20th. We at Branch 18 have a number of events all week. Our Honours and Awards night is Sept 25th. Sept 30th is a joint Legion Ladies Auxiliary executive meeting.
