District Convention......
Tuesday, April 27, 2010
I was at the District Convention in St Thomas on the weekend of April 16th to 18th. Now most people think it's all a fun time, but there is a lot of business being done during this convention. The days are taken up with meetings from 9:00am until after 4:00pm. Reports from all the council's chairpersons, then the Zone Commanders. Once everyone has reported on their activities of the past 6 months, then the real business starts. First the Presidents meeting report is read then any requests or concerns that the Presidents of the Branches may have. Then we open the floor up for new business, this is where it can become most interesting and where some of our best ideas come from. This past convention was no different. One of the ideas put forth was for the use of Computer generated graphics for the senior poster contest in the future. It has started the trek at the Branch level, then at February's Zone convention and now the District Convention. Next stop is Provincial convention, then on to Dominion Convention. It's not a simple trip to get something new to be adopted. Then in the evenings are the social events. Here you meet people and learn any new things happening at other Branches. The exchange of ideas can help your Branch, also the friendships formed can last a very long time. As I have said in the past, sometimes you can learn more on a break at a convention or training seminar then at the actual event. I encourage everyone to look at these events as a learning experience. To all executive members, please check the office board for training seminars coming up as they are important. Also there are many training seminars coming right now, they are not just for the Executive members. The general membership and the Ladies Auxiliary are invited to attend these informative training sessions.
Events: May 1st there's two things, first off at 1:00 pm at the arena is the Annual Sea Cadet inspection. We at Branch 18 support these fine young people when we can. Also later that day is a Rib Dinner, please call the bar for more info on it. May 2nd at 12:00 noon at the Cenotaph is our Battle of the Atlantic Ceremony, dress is Blues and Grays plus Berets. Also it is the 100 anniversary of the Canadian Navy.
