Legion Musing
Tempered by sadness

Sunday June 27th was Decoration Day here at Branch 18 Legion in Wallaceburg. Sadly it was tempered by the news of yet 2 more Brave Canadians killed in Afghanistan. MCpl Kristal Giesebrecht and Pte. Andrew Miller. MCpl Giesebrecht was born here in Wallaceburg and raised in Chatham. This hit home the reality of the War in Afghanistan and how it effects people across our great country Canada. Our Padre Brian Horrobin contacted me early Sunday morning to ask if we should honour her. Which we agreed was only right. Not only the Legion but also our local politicians honour this brave Medic. I know from personal experience that when we are overseas it is in the back of our minds that we might be killed or wounded. However we think of the others serving with us and the civilians, not ourselves when in action and on patrol. It is people like MCpl Giesebrecht and Pte. Miller who define what is great about Canada and the Soldiers who serve in our military. God Bless you both , Rest in Peace.
Speaking of Afghanistan, we have launched Operation Smell Good. To help our troops, please drop off car air fresheners at Branch 18 Legion in Wallaceburg. The bunkers they live in for protection do get quite ripe. You cannot believe the smell. The car air fresheners will help make the bunkers a little more livable for them.
July 1st is our Annual Branch 18 Children's Fishing Derby. Starting at 8:30 AM with the signup of the children. There will be a prize for every child as well as pop, a hotdog and a bag of chips.
Events: Christmas in July is happening on Saturday July 17th this year. I like to remind everyone of our Saturday Meat Draws. The music starts at 4:00PM and the Draws at 5:00PM. A great way to spend Saturday with good friends, good times and you might win Sunday's dinner. Branch 18, the friendliest Legion in town.
