Welcome the Holidays Aboard a Cruise Ship

The old song claims there’s no place like home for the holidays, but plenty of travelers will tell you that a cruise ship is a great place for the holidays. Many cruise lines joyfully observe the holiday season, including Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas and New Year’s, with special meals, decorations and activities.

During Thanksgiving week, cruise ships are adorned with pumpkins, colorful leaves and cornucopias of harvest season delights. On Thanksgiving Day, expect a traditional dinner featuring roast turkey and all the trimmings. Some ships even arrange to broadcast football games onboard.

Many cruise lines celebrate Hanukkah with traditional foods such as matzo ball soup, potato latkes and jelly doughnuts. Some ships have a rabbi on board to lead prayers and songs and supervise the nightly lighting of the menorah.

Cruise ships welcome Christmas with sparkling decorations, traditional Christmas feasts, visits from Santa and tree-lighting ceremonies. On many ships, families can gather to make holiday crafts, sing carols and attend services. Some ships feature island-style Christmas parties; others give “snowbirds” a taste of home with a little ersatz snowfall.

The carefree feeling of a cruise is a perfect match with a New Year’s celebration. Many ships hold festive parties on New Year’s Eve, complete with party favors, live music and dancing, an official countdown to midnight and a champagne toast. Some ships hold parties on deck; others have guests gather in the atrium for a midnight showering of balloons, streamers and confetti. New Years Eve on a Cruise Ship is a big deal.
