Marvelous Variety of Staterooms

Tuesday, December 8, 2009

An important decision for any cruise passenger is the type of stateroom to reserve. Whether you plan to spend considerable time in your stateroom or just sleep there, you should understand the variety of staterooms (also called cabins) available on most cruise ships.

While a cruise ship can have dozens of categories of accommodations, there are really only four basic types:

1.      Inside staterooms open off an inside corridor and do not have a window. Often, the décor makes clever use of lighting, mirrors and/or draperies to give the illusion of a window. This is the most economical type of stateroom.
2.      Outside staterooms are located along the sides of the ship, with a window. It can be wonderful to wake up each morning and look out your window to find yourself in a new port of call. Outside staterooms usually cost a little more than an inside stateroom.
3.      Balcony (or verandah) staterooms are also located along the sides of the ship, with a balcony that allows you to step outside and enjoy the sea breeze. The balcony may offer some privacy or may be open to the view of others who are enjoying their balconies. These accommodations cost more than regular outside staterooms, but the opportunity for indoor/outdoor relaxation can be well worth it.
4.      Suites are more spacious than regular staterooms. A cruise ship suite can be anything from a compact sleeping area and an equally compact sitting area to a multi-room villa with its own kitchen, hot tub, grand piano, terrace and butler. Suites are the costliest accommodations on board, but can offer surprisingly good value. If you are traveling with several people, a suite may be as economical as reserving the number of individual staterooms your group would need.
For each type of stateroom, there are variables that include square footage, amenities, location within the ship, possible view obstructions and more. That’s why there can be so many categories of accommodations on a single ship.

Let your personal cruise expert help you sift through the options and select a stateroom or suite that best fits your needs and budget.
