Chatham-Kent Safety Village Chatter
Programs starting up at the Village
Tuesday, March 24, 2009
Spring is here and that means time for another session of fun, interactive, life saving lessons at the Chatham-Kent Childrenís Safety Village. Our spring program is designed specifically for grade 4 students who will have the opportunity to learn about bicycle safety from Chatham-Kent Police Services, fire escape planning from the Chatham-Kent Fire Department and electrical safety from Chatham-Kent Hydro. All schools within the local community are welcome to attend.
The Safety Village currently offers programming for grades 1, 4, and 6, as these are the children most at risk of being injured in this area. Attendance for the 2008/2009 school year has been outstanding. The grade 1 program, held last fall, brought through a record 1,000 students. The most recent program was the grade 6 winter session which also did extremely well with attendance doubling from the previous year.
Teachers, make sure to book your grade 4 classes soon as our spring program is also expected to fill up quickly. The program runs from mid April to mid May and is based on a first come first serve basis. Thanks to the generosity of many local businesses, corporations, and individuals there is currently no cost to attend the Safety Village.
The Chatham-Kent Children's Safety Village is also proud to announce The First Annual Sparky, Elmer and Andy Safety Recognition Awards. This is an opportunity to acknowledge the brave and courageous youth of Chatham-Kent. Acts of heroism and good citizenship will be recognized. Children that reside in Chatham-Kent who are in grades junior kindergarten through to grade eight are eligible. Judging will be done by the following safety professionals; the Chatham-Kent Police Services, Chatham-Kent Fire Department, Chatham-Kent Paramedics Association, and School Board Representatives. Winners of the safety awards will receive a Sparky, Elmer and Andy Award Trophy and a citation certificate signed by the Chatham-Kent Police Chief or the Chatham-Kent Fire Chief. The nomination due date has been extended to Thursday, April 9th, 2009.
