GETTING THE MOST FROM YOUR SOLAR ENERGY SYSTEM

Tuesday, June 15, 2010

From a Release - RIDGETOWN - University of Guelph Ridgetown Campus is delivering information sessions across Ontario in the upcoming weeks to answer important questions about solar energy systems, including how you can get the most out of your system and how you get connected.

Those attending will have a chance to hear advice from mechanical engineer Thomas Boehni of
Switzerland. Mr. Boehni has 18 years experience in roof mounted solar systems and has a wealth
of knowledge to share. Mr. Boehni is passionate about green energy. His solar system business in
Switzerland and southern Germany is thriving.

Last year they installed just under one megawatt
(MW) of roof mounted modules, mostly 10 kW to 100 kW in size. Little things like where your
modules are pointed and if you keep them clean can make a difference, according to Mr. Boehni.
The sessions will provide information about proper construction, efficient long-term operation, and awareness of processes, regulations and timing. Those attending will also hear from OMAFRA engineers and from a representative of Hydro One.

There will be a discussion of FIT and microFIT
programs, updates on rural solar systems and information about connecting to the grid.

These sessions will be held across Ontario in late June and early July. Sessions will be
held during the evening (7:00pm – 10:00pm) with the exception of Seaforth which will be
held in the afternoon (1:00pm – 4:00pm).
Here is the schedule:
 Monday, June 28 Ridgetown
Tuesday, June 29 Seaforth (1:00pm - 4:00pm)
Woodstock
Wed., June 30 Mount Forest
Friday, July 2 New Liskeard
Monday, July 5 Lindsay
Tuesday, July 6 Belleville
Wed., July 7 Kemptville
Registration fee is $10.00 in advance and $15.00 at the door.

Those that are interested in attending can register online at www.ridgetownc.com/solar or
call Dezarae Malott at (519) 674-1500 ext. 1295 or 1-877-480-9992.

TRACKING THE TRUE TALE OF TURKEYS
06/14/10
Ed. Note, Everything you would need to know about turkeys! Save this item for Thanksgiving Day Trivia.

New research analyzes the life and times of the nation's favorite poultry
The turkey dinner is a staple part of Christmas Day, but new research at the University of Leicester reveals that the history of the much loved poultry is in fact rather varied and unexpected.

Brooklynne Fothergill, from the University's School of Archaeology and Ancient History, has found that the turkey was not always used as a meat product. It was initially domesticated as a source of feathers, as well as being used for symbolic purposes by the indigenous peoples of North America.

Brooklynne Fothergill's research investigates the archaeology and history of the turkey through the interpretation of signs of disease present in turkey bones from archaeological sites. She also uses archival sources in order to place the turkey and human populations within the appropriate social and historical contexts. Her study spans a period of 1,000 years, from c. 750 to 1750, and identifies long-term patterns of disease and injury in the species and examines changes over time in animal husbandry practices.
The results of the study will be used to explore research questions concerning the health of turkey populations and the connections between the health of domestic animals and human behaviour.

Brooklynne commented:
"My project will be the first systematic analysis of signs of disease and injury in a North American species, and the first to explore the socio-economic context and health impact of the transatlantic movement of animals."

CORN CROP PROGRESSING WELL
06/14/10
Here is the latest crop report on corn from OMAFRA's Greg Stewart.

CHU accumulation for the week of June 2-8 was very close to normal across the province. Most corn advanced two leaf stages, is in good condition and remains ahead of normal. Some fields are slightly less uniform than hoped for because of saturated conditions, soil crusting or fertilizer burn. Lessons learned: 1) perform crust busting /rotary hoeing before corn leafs-out under ground and 2) consider changing N source to reduce urea burn on light textured soils.

Nitrogen sidedressing had been moving along well but above average rainfall has stalled progress somewhat. Soil nitrate sampling results (PSNT) continue to demonstrate above average residual nitrogen levels this year, particularly in areas that had been drier than normal in April and May and were organic N from legumes and manures were part of the cropping system. Weeds that have emerged any time prior to the 8th leaf stage of the
corn need to be brought under control. Weeds that emerge after this time generally do not pose a significant yield risk, especially if the late emergers are grasses.

SOYBEAN CROP PROGRESS BETTER THAN AVERAGE-OMAFRA
06/14/10
Here's the latest on Ontario soybeans from OMAFRA's Horst Bohner.

Soybean growth continues to be above long term averages. Early planted fields are now in the third trifoliate leaf stage while the majority of the crop is at the first trifoliate stage. Some areas have not been able to finish planting due to excess soil moisture. Soybeans can be seeded up to the end of June successfully but yield potential drops significantly once seeding is past the 15th of June. If planting is delayed until mid June, increase seeding rates by 10% and use narrow rows to maximize yield potential. Late planted soybeans have an ability to adjust to the length of growing season because of their inherent day-length sensitivity. A one month delay in planting will generally delay maturity by only nine days. Early season competition from weeds cuts yields. Soybeans should not go beyond the third trifoliate before weeds are eliminated. Even in glyphosate tolerant fields weeds must be controlled early to maximize yields. The first to third trifoliate leaf stage is usually optimum for the first in-crop application of
glyphosate.

BEES CAN BE POISONED TOO!-CANOLA GROWERS
06/14/10
Ed. note: This technical reminder comes from the Ontario Canola Growers Association.

A reminder to prevent bee poisonings when spraying insecticides:

Scout your field to be sure that spraying is necessary. Note that populations of Cabbage Seedpod Weevil will be higher at the outside of your fields.
Bees are most active during the day. If you must apply an insecticide, apply it after 7 pm when bees are not foraging. The evening is the best time to spray. Alternately spray before 7 am. Bees do not forage below 13 degrees Celsius.
Before applying a insecticide, be sure to advise local bee keepers, so they can move colonies out of danger areas.
Refer to Table 1.5, Relative Toxicity of Insecticides to Honey Bees, in the OMAFRA Field Crop Protection Guide for further information.
