BACON SALES RISE DESPITE HIGHER PORK PRICES CANADIANS LOVE THEIR BLTS

Tuesday, August 10, 2010

From the Toronto Star, Dana Flavelle Business Reporter

The cost of putting pork on your fork may be soaring but Canadians aren’t giving up bacon, especially home-made bacon lettuce and tomato sandwiches during the peak tomato harvest season.

Ignoring warnings about salt and fat, we will eat 50 per cent more bacon-lettuce and tomato sandwiches at home this year than in 2005, according to The NPD Group Inc., a market research firm.

We’re also eating more bacon in fast food restaurants, where it’s a popular topping on burgers and in breakfast buns, the market research firm’s data shows.

About 17 per cent of all burgers are bacon cheeseburgers for total of 118 million bacon-loaded burgers sold annually in Canada, said Linda Strachan, the firm’s director of foodservice.

“It delivers taste and a few pennies difference in the topping on their favourite burger or sandwich isn't likely to sway them,” she said.

Bacon may be seen as a cheap indulgence compared to other meats, part of the “trading down” phenomenon that began during the recession, Gregoire said.

The introduction of low sodium varieties may also be helping spur sales, though they still make up a relatively low portion of retail sales, he added.

Prices for bacon usually climb in August when tomatoes are ready for harvest and more people eat bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwiches. And hot dry weather means 2010’s is a bumper tomato crop.

“Typically sales of bacon are highest at this time of year, not just in BLTs but in everything else,” says Keith Robbins, a spokesperson for the Ontario Pork Producers. “Bacon’s a good flavour enhancer. It’s used on everything from bacon burgers to Caesar salads. Seasonally you’re travelling more, grabbing more stuff on the road. There’s a number of those types of things that come into market.”

The wholesale price of pork bellies, used to make bacon, is up 72 per cent over this time last year on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, which sets the price for North America.

At $1.43 a pound U.S., that’s the highest level since at least 1998 as hog producers on both sides of the border flee what has been a money-losing business. However, it’s unclear who’s swallowing the higher wholesale fees.

Intense competition among restaurant chains and retailers in Canada means they have limited ability to pass on price increases.

The price of a 500 mg package of bacon in the supermarket hit a high of $5.13 in 2004, according to the Consumer Price Index, but was just $4.71 in June of this year.

As well, North American hog producers continue to struggle despite the price increase. At $155 per hog in Ontario, up from $110 last summer, producers are just now breaking even, Robbins said.

Wholesale prices are likely to head higher as record numbers of hog producers continue to leave the industry.

In Ontario, market hogs are down by 12 per cent while breeding sows are down by 20 per cent compared to this time last year, the pork producers association said.

Between the erroneously dubbed “swine flu,” renamed H1N1, and ethanol demand driving up the price of corn, a primary feed for hogs, the industry has taken a beating.

4-H LOWERS MEMBERSHIP AGE
08/09/10
From a release
Guelph - The Ontario 4-H Council Board of Directors voted in favor of lowering the starting age of 4-H Members to 9 years of age (prior to January 1st of the year the Member joins). This policy amendment will become effective as of January 1, 2011.

Shonna Ward, Ontario 4-H Council President, commented that "this policy change allows the Council to address three goals with the first being synergy with 4-H delivery partners across Canada. Second, enabling younger siblings of current members to join sooner, and third, supporting communities throughout Ontario with a younger entry point to outstanding youth leadership development opportunities."

Concurrent with this announcement is the launch of a related 18-month pilot project entitled Clover Buds. During this pilot project, the staff of 4-H Ontario will be identifying and selecting 6 community partners to run 4-H Clover Bud programs for 6 to 8 year olds. With existing programs located in other provinces and the United States to mentor from, it is time for us to launch and evaluate this alternate program option on a pilot project basis.

These are two wonderful examples of 4-H Ontario embracing change through a clear and focused strategic plan. A plan designed to enable us to achieve our 5-year goal of welcoming 10,000 members and 3,000 volunteers into the program. 2015 will mark the 100th Anniversary of 4-H in Ontario and we invite all of you to come and explore 4-H today! We are looking for volunteers to run clubs in their own communities, whether in rural Ontario, the suburbs or downtown. Call us today at 1-877-410-6748.

NEW APPROVAL FOR CONTROL OF WESTERN BEAN CUTWORM
08/05/10
From OMAFRA

The Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) recently announced the approval of URMULE registrations for MATADOR/WARRIOR INSECTICIDE for control of Western Bean Cutworm (WBC) on corn (all types) and Legume vegetables (crop group 6) in Canada. The active ingredient cyhalothrin-lambda was already labeled on a wide range of crops including grains, oilseeds, vegetables and fruits. Note that Warrior will eventually replace Matador in the marketplace.

This minor use project was submitted in 2009 by the minor use office of OMAFRA as a result of minor use priorities established by growers and extension personnel in Canada. The minor use label expansion for Matador/Warrior Insecticide is a significant step towards developing a pest management toolkit for WBC on corn and Legume vegetables in Canada. WBC has been increasing in incidence in the mid-western U.S. and southern Ontario and has caused significant damage in Michigan and Ohio. Effective pest management tools are urgently required in Canada.

The following is provided as a general outline only. Users should consult the complete label before using Matador/Warrior Insecticide.

Matador/Warrior Insecticide can be used for control of WBC on corn and Legume vegetables at a rate of 83 - 187 mL per ha in 100 - 200 L water per ha for ground applications and 10 - 40 L water per ha for aerial applications (Matador only) on corn and 20 L water per ha on Legumes. Application should be based on the presence of vulnerable pest developmental stages and significant populations as determined by local monitoring. Applications can be repeated at 4 - 7 day intervals.

For corn do not apply more than 3 times per year; only two of which may be by air (consult label for aerial application instructions). Do not apply within 1 day of harvest for sweet corn, 14 days of harvest for silage corn and 21 days of harvest for field corn, popcorn and seed corn.

For Legume vegetables do not apply more than 3 times per year; only two of which may be by air (consult label for aerial application instructions). Do not apply within 7 days of harvest of edible podded beans, 14 days of harvest of edible podded peas, succulent shelled beans and peas and 21 days of harvest of soybeans, dry beans, dry peas, lentils and chickpeas.

Matador/Warrior Insecticide should be used in an integrated pest management program and in rotation with other management strategies to adequately manage resistance.

Follow all other precautions and directions for use on the Matador/Warrior Insecticide labels carefully.

This minor use project was sponsored by the minor use office of OMAFRA as a result of minor use priorities established by producers and extension personnel in Canada. We also wish to thank the personnel of Syngenta Crop Protection Canada Inc. for their support of this registration and the personnel of the Pest Management Regulatory Agency for evaluating and approving this important pest management tool.
