WESTERN WHEAT PRODUCTION ESTIMATES SLASHED DUE TO WET WEATHER, SOYBEANS TO BREAK RECORDS
Tuesday, August 24, 2010
StatsCan came out with their production estimates Friday and as expected, the big news was from the prairies where wheat farmers were unable to seed millions of acres due to spring flooding.Total wheat production in the Prairies is expected to reach 20.5 million metric tonnes, a drop of 15.5% from 2009. Harvested area is expected to decline by 3.3 million acres.
Manitoba and Saskatchewan farmers estimate respective decreases of 20.5% and 25.7% in production, while Alberta production is expected to rise 4.9%, the result of stronger anticipated yields.
Meantime western Canola production will also be down.
Prairie farmers reported that they expect to harvest 10.7 million tonnes of canola, down by 977 400 tonnes from the 11.7 million tonnes reported in 2009. The decline would be due to a drop in yield from an estimated 34.6 bushels per acre to 30.7 bushels per acre.
Provincially, farmers in Manitoba and Saskatchewan reported potential declines in area harvested, yield and production. Alberta farmers reported a rise in production, up 30.6% to 4.1 million tonnes, the result of predicted increases in yield and harvested area.
In eastern Canada, soybean production is expected to increase significantly. Farmers in Quebec, Ontario and Manitoba predict increases in soybean production to record levels, due to an expected new high in harvested area and robust yields in all three provinces.
Soybean production in Quebec is anticipated to reach a new high of 730 000 tonnes. This optimism is based on an increase in harvested area, up 12.2% to an estimated 659,800 acres.
Ontario farmers expect soybean production to rise 8.1% to 2.8 million tonnes, the result of an increase of 45,000 harvested acres to 2.4 million acres.
And Canada's corn growers are forecasting higher production as well. The StatsCan report shows a 13.2% increase over last year at 10.823 million tonnes.
STATSCAN LIVESTOCK ESTIMATES SHOW DECLINES IN CATTLE AND HOGS
08/19/10
StatsCan came out with their July 1 estimates of livestock on farms.
Inventories of major livestock on Canadian farms (cattle, hogs and sheep) all declined between July 1, 2009, and July 1, 2010.
The Canadian cattle herd fell by 4.9% to 14.0 million and has been in a steady decline since its peak of 16.9 million in 2005.
At the same time, the hog inventory fell 2.4% to 11.8 million, while the number of sheep on Canadian farms decreased 1.9% to 1.0 million head.

US: EGG RECALL RENEWS QUESTIONS ON BATTLING SALMONELLA
08/19/10
From USA Today
Elizabeth Weise
A national salmonella outbreak that could have sickened thousands has led to the recall of 380 million eggs and renewed questions about whether it's feasible to keep the microbe — the most common bacterial source of food-borne illness in the nation — out of the henhouse.
The answer from experiences in Denmark and Sweden seems to be a qualified yes. It can be done, but at what cost?
The eggs being recalled — the amount was expanded Wednesday from 228 million — are from Wright County Egg, a Galt, Iowa, company whose five facilities produce 2.3 million dozen eggs a week, spokeswoman Hinda Mitchell says. The recalled eggs total almost 32 million dozen. In 2009, the United States produced nearly 6.5 billion dozen eggs, says the United Egg Producers.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that hundreds of people have been sickened in the outbreak, which appears to have started in May. CDC epidemiologist Christopher Braden said Wednesday that there may be thousands of illnesses, though no reported deaths. California health officials say at least 266 people in that state were sickened.
Egg producers in Sweden and Denmark have virtually eliminated salmonella from all poultry beginning in the 1970s. They tested flocks and if any came up positive, they would be slaughtered, says Lars Plym Forshell of Sweden's National Food Administration. "In the early days, farmers got 100% compensation" from the government for flocks they lost. Today, because only two or three flocks a year need to be destroyed, it's covered by insurance.
American experts say such draconian programs don't make sense
JAPANESE OFFICIALS HERE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT CANADIAN SOYBEAN INDUSTRY
08/23/10
From a Release
Senior representatives from Japan’s soybean industry are spending five days in Canada to learn more about the quality of Canadian food-grade soybeans and the industry that is committed to delivering a safe, high quality product to meet the needs of Japanese consumers.
The 4th CSC Japan-Canada Soybean Program runs from August 23 to 27, 2010. The program is sponsored by the Canadian Soybean Council (CSC) and coordinated by the Canadian International Grains Institute (CIGI). The eight participants attending the program represent key segments of the Japanese soybean processing industry including the Japanese soy sauce, tofu, frozen tofu, natto, vegetable protein and soybean flour industries. In addition, there is a representative from the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries attending the program.
“This is an excellent opportunity for Canada’s soybean industry to demonstrate to these associations Canada’s capabilities to produce quality soybeans that offer unique processing characteristics for food uses,” says Dr. Linda Malcolmson, CIGI’s Lead Research Scientist, Special Crops, Oilseeds and Pulses. “Seeing is believing. This program is designed to showcase how the Canadian industry works together from researchers to producers to exporters to provide a high-quality product.”
The program begins in Winnipeg on August 23 with presentations from the Canadian Grain Commission on the Canadian Identity Preserved Recognition System (CIPRS) and soybean inspection and grading. The group will also tour a research farm before departing for Eastern Canada for the remainder of the week. While in Quebec and Ontario the group will visit a farm, soybean handling and processing facilities, the Montreal Port Authority, and breeding and research facilities. The group will also meet with representatives from government, grower, and industry organizations.
Jim Gowland, Chair of the CSC, says the program is part of the industry’s continuing efforts to strengthen the relationship with Canada’s largest importer of food-grade soybeans. Japan imported more than 350,000 tonnes of Canadian food-grade soybeans in 2009. “Over the past few years the CSC, in partnership with CIGI, has led a number of initiatives including outgoing missions to Japan and incoming programs like this one to allow for the exchange of technical information and to discuss future requirements,” says Gowland. “Everyone involved benefits from these opportunities.”
Established in 2005, the CSC is a national organization representing soybean growers in Ontario, Quebec and Manitoba. Its members include the Grain Farmers of Ontario (GFO), the Manitoba Pulse Growers Association (MPGA) and the Fédération des Producteurs de Cultures Commerciales du Quebec (FPCCQ). One of its priorities is to identify and develop new markets for Canadian soybeans through collaborative market development initiatives.
Since 1972 more than 32,000 people representing grain, oilseed, pulse and special crops industries from 114 countries have participated in CIGI programs and seminars. CIGI is a non-profit market development organization with a vision to be the recognized leader specializing in offering continuous advances in Canadian field crop products to the world. Core funding is provided by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Canadian Wheat Board. Additional funds and support are provided by other sectors of the agriculture industry.

ADJUST LIQUID MANURE TIRES ON THE FLY (AUG 17, 2010) BOOKMARK AND SHARE
08/19/10
From Farms.com
It’s a well known concept that reducing the inflation pressure in tires reduces the potential for soil compaction on heavy equipment like liquid manure applicators. But the tires then need to be re-inflated to head down the road back to the barn for another load.
Omafra’s Greg Stewart is working with some farmers on a system to inflate and deflate the tires as needed. They have mounted a hydraulic operated air compresser on a liquid manure spreader, and connected it to the tires. It is controlled from inside the cab of the tractor and can be operated while the vehicles are moving. On the experimental applicator all four tires are connected so the pressure stays equal. The experiment was put together over the early part of this year, and the timing is right for testing now that wheat harvest is virtually complete and the land available for manure application.
The problem is the time it takes to deflate the tires. This is an issue if the equipment is making 30 or 40 trips a day from a field, along a road to a manure storage lagoon, and back. Stewart says the inflation process can start as the tractor is coming to the end of the row, because the manure tank is almost empty, but deflating when the tractor gets back to the field takes about two minutes.
