The View From My Desk

What is Happening at the Ridgetown Branch of the Chatham-Kent Public Library

Tuesday, December 6, 2011

The view from my desk lately has been one of rain, rain, and even more rain as the days of November have wound to a close.  Hopefully the arrival of the "white stuff" aka SNOW !!  will only happen on Christmas Eve for all those kids , big and small that dream of a White Christmas.  And if it happens to turn out to be a green Christmas, we have both the DVD and music CD of ole Bing singing about a White Christmas as a substitute.

We kick off our Christmas month with our Christmas Open House and Patron Appreciation Day on Thursday, December 8, beginning in the afternoon with Christmas tree ornament making; you can make one ornament to take home and make another ornament for our poor lonely Charlie Brown Christmas tree.  You can even decorate a sweet treat to take home with you or enjoy it with us.  In the evening at 6:00 p.m. we will have a small presentation to our local community supporters, who have helped us out tremendously this past year, because we cannot do the things we do without their help.  At 6:45 p.m. we will enjoy a very special Family Christmas Storyhour with lots of wonderful Christmas stories, crafts and activities.  Please join us as we celebrate this joyous season.

Think you might be receiving a new techie toy under the Christmas tree this year ?  Or you have one and need some help with it, well, never fear our CAP trainers can come to your rescue.  We offer one on one training throughout the month of December but we are also offering a Touch Technology Workshop, an interactive guide to your device on Friday, December 16 , 3:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.  In this workshop you will learn how to download ebooks, audiobooks and apps, you will learn how to transfer data from your computer to your device and you will also learn how to get the most use out of your device.  This is a FREE workshop, but space is limited and pre-registration is required.  For more information or to sign up for this workshop, please contact the Ridgetown Branch of the Chatham-Kent Public Library at 519-674-3121.

Coincidentally this month we are featuring as our database of the month , Overdrive Audiobooks and ebooks , OverDrive provides a collection of fiction and non-fiction audiobooks and ebooks. OverDrive’s download service provides direct transfer to iPod, Zune, and nearly all MP3 players and eBook readers. This is quickly becoming a popular service for libraries’ mobile and connected users. If you are curious as to how it works, please ask us or sign up for our free workshop.

Continuing our Christmas celebrations this month we are hosting another National Film Board movie night on Tuesday, December 20 beginning at 6:00 p.m. This is an animated film, twenty-three minutes in length.  Noël Noël, a misguided billionaire, is in love with Beatrice, a bespectacled fairy. But thanks to little Zoey, her dog Snooze and a blue eyed reindeer, Noël’s eyes are finally opened. Enlivened by humorous, rhyming narration by Leslie Nielsen, Noël Noël is an animated fantasy about Christmas that reminds us that happiness comes when the heart is allowed to speak. We welcome everyone to the FREE event.

And as it happens every year , we do have closures throughout the holiday season, beginning on Saturday December 24 , we will be closed on that day right through to Thursday December 29, when we will be open on that date and the next day ,Friday December 30 and then closed again until Tuesday, January 3 when we will re-open for regular business. Due dates for your materials will be adjusted accordingly , but please if you have any questions, contact us and we can help you.

And so, another year draws to a close, my last View from My Desk for 2011 and from us , at the Ridgetown Branch of the Chatham-Kent Public Library to all of you, our patrons, readers of this column and to everyone , we wish you all the best this holiday season , and may the New Year be filled with all the good things in life for you all.  Take care.
