Share the Road - Same Roads, Same Rules, Same Rights

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

Spring is here! Expect to see cyclists on the road. Under the Highway Traffic Act, cyclists have the same rights, responsibilities and obligations as motorists and should be treated the same. Sharing the road means cyclists and motorists must work together being courteous, co-operative and safe.

Designated bike lanes and share the road symbols are appearing on our roadways. A sharrow symbol reminds us the road is to be shared. A diamond shape marking with a bicycle decal and a solid white line identifies a bicycle only lane. Motorists are prohibited from driving or parking in bike lanes. So what if you are travelling on a road with no markings, or what if the bike lane ends? Cyclists have the right to be on any non 400 series roads – marked or not. Markings increase our awareness of motorists and cyclists sharing the road.

As a cyclist, following the rules of the road makes your actions more predictable. Ride on the right, going the same direction as the traffic in that lane. Did you know that if you are riding at night, one half hour before sunset to one half hour after sunrise you must have a white front light and a red rear light or reflector on your bike? A bicycle must have a bell or horn in good working order at all times of the day. The law requires a cyclist under the age of eighteen to wear an approved, proper fitting bicycle helmet, however it is a good practice for all to follow to prevent a head injury.

Be a safe motorist. When passing a cyclist, slow down and when safe to do so pass giving at least one meter of space to the cyclist.) There may be times when a cyclist needs to ride in the lane to travel safely; motorists need to be patient. An experienced cyclist can ride 40 – 50 km/hr. Always check your blind spots when changing lanes, making a turn or simply opening your car door. While children can be cyclists and have the same responsibilities, they can be unpredictable. To keep them safe, expect the unexpected! Go slow, give them lots of room and be extra careful!

Whether you are the cyclist or the motorist, be considerate of others, drive safely and Share the Road.
