The official Grand Opening of the Capitol Theatre in Chatham has been scheduled for Friday September 17 at 10 AM. Everybody is invited. Trumpets will blow and representatives of all three levels of government, the Capitol Theatre Association, community donors and citizens will flip the switch that lights up the grand marquee on King Street. Free tours of the totally restored and improved theatre will follow the ceremony.
The Capitol Theatre has already featured entertainers such as the Tap Dogs, a popular dance group that bill themselves “the internationally acclaimed hottest show on legs”. Other big names such as comedian Bill Cosby are scheduled to appear this fall. The theatre restoration is meant to stimulate Chatham-Kent’s creative economy, and to help to renew the vitality of downtown Chatham.
“We are already seeing new interest and business activity in downtown Chatham thanks to the revitalization of the theatre,” said Lorie Gore, Executive Director of the Historic Downtown Chatham Business Improvement Association.
“This kind of cultural activity not only improves our quality of life, but it also attracts newcomers to the community, added the municipality’s Director of Economic Development, Kathy Weiss. “Culture and economic development go hand in hand.”
“There have been a lot of people waiting a long time for this day to come. The trust of our donors, supporters, and volunteers has carried us to this point and I couldn’t be happier for them and for all of Chatham-Kent,” said Dan Donaldson, General manager of the Chatham Capitol Theatre Association.
