We’re dreaming of a white…..Scout Campout!!
Tuesday, January 4, 2011
Many groups are gearing up for our winter campouts, snow hikes, ice fishing trips and of course tobogganing outings.
Winter camping
Winter camping is not for everyone, but if you know what to pack you can have a blast! We take our cub scouts out to camp at EM Warwick every January. Now due to the age of the group we do have our pack sleep in half heated cabins at night, but when we send our Scouts out to camp, it’s all tenting. Not sure, if the Scouts are winter camping this year but they have many times in the past.
Knowing what to pack for camp can make or break a good campout. This is true for every campout whether its warm or cold; a good packing list will help you get what you need to camp without packing the house. Packing for cold weather is a little different then warm. You’ll need a sleeping pad (no air mattresses – way to cold) and either a minus sleeping bag or a medium temperature bag with a liner. Having a hood on the bag is a good idea to keep your head warm, if your bag doesn’t have a hood you’ll want to sleep with a toque. And a small pillow too, if you need one. Clothing requirements are similar, clean under garments, warm socks (wool is the best – warm, dry and breathes), long underwear (moisture wicking if possible), long pants (a good cotton works best), long sleeve shirt and a warm sweater or hoody. Outer wear should include a good pair of winter boots (I prefer to have a rubber wrap style- keep dry too), a warm snow suit ( two piece just in case mother nature calls while in the bush), your hat (that covers your ears) and of course a good pair of water proof mittens/ gloves. Remembering to dress in layers is very important. It’s always easy to take a layer off then add one when you just don’t have it. Theses are just the basics, you’ll still need to bring your tent (if your tent camping), your cooking equipment and your food and water reserves.
Helpful hint: add items to your list when you get home from previous camps that you forgot to bring. Sometimes, you get to camp and discover you forgot something…i.e./ the butter or oil for the cooking pans; oops, it happens!!
If you’re not ready to camp just yet; you can always try taking a winter hike instead. The landscape and trails are beautiful at this time a year.
Youth Appreciation Awards are Coming to Chatham-Kent
The Youth Appreciation Awards for Tri-Shores are being held in Chatham –Kent, June 4th, 2011 and we need to start getting ready…. to do this we need your Scouting memories. If you have any memories you would like share of your times as a youth member or as a leader; please add them to our facebook page or email them to us. We will compile a book for display at the Awards days. Afterwards we will give the book to the Scout Hut Museum.
An email account and a facebook group have been setup. The idea is to get people to send us their memories of being involved in Scouting either as a youth or an adult. Please email us at: chathamkentscoutingmemories@gmail.com or facebook with us on the Chatham Kent Scouting Memories (this is an open group).
Let’s make this the best Youth Appreciation Awards today for the Tri-Shores Council.
