Well it has been awhile since I did a book report and The Rolling Stones books keep coming out at a rapid pace. Some of them good and most of them crap, repeats of the same old stuff. Here area few booksfrom my collection that fall into the better Stones books out there to read.
UNDER THERE THUMB: Hardcover Villard Books 2009 edition written by Bill German who fulfils one of his childhood dreams by breaking down some of the Rolling Stones barriers long enoughfor him tojoin in on the rock side of life---you get an up and close look into the exclusive world of The Rolling Stones---it all started when he launched the fanzine Beggars Banquet (which this Stones fan joined way back in 1983) forever managing to be in the right place at the right time, he impressed the boys enough for them to put their stamp of approval on the Beggars Banquet issues. The rest is history for Bill and his insightful look into recording sessions and concerts around the world are all here for the readers to enjoy---If you were to buy one of my reviewed books today, this is the one at the top of the pile. 354 pages and lots of b&w photos---check out Bill German's site to get this great book and personally autographed by the author www.billgerman.com
RONNIE WOOD: Bio written by Ron Wood, 356 pages on St. Martin's Press New York Publishers 2007 lots of colour and b&w photos---Ron touches all the bases of band life, hislife with Rod Stewart/ The Barbarians/the Gunslingersand his joining the band---the missed phone call that would have put him in the band years before he actually joined--one of his band mates answered the phone and told Mick that Ron wasn't interested in joining the band---they hired Mick Taylor instead. Ronnie has played with most of the great blues players, his artwork, painting, drawings and prints are widely exhibited (this groupie proudlyowns his Chuck Berry print on display in the Stones Dome) this book is another great book
BLOWN AWAY: "The Rolling Stones and the Death of The Sixties by A.E. Hotchner a hardcover book, Simon and Schuster 1990---also the more expensive edition by Eames Press (very well made edition leather bound with gold trimmed pages usually signed by A.E. Hotchner (of course it is the one in my collection) 350 pages of exciting collaborations with more than 250 personal interviewsfrompeople that knew the Stones personally Marianne Faithfull/Andrew Oldham/Anita Pallenberg etc---this book exposes the sex and drugs of the rock life and the death of the 60's---this is a personal powerful read
BILL WYMAN'S BLUES ODYSSEY: 2001 published DK Books, alarge hardcover 400 pages of pure Blues---this book is a MUST HAVE for your Blues collection---Bill Wyman and Richard Havers have done their homework covering the blues from 1619-1865 Slavery to Freedom Period/ Memphis Jug Bands/The Depression Era/Big Bands/Fabulous Fifties/ Welcome to Woodstock/ Great Blues Legends. Features previously unpublished photographs, some from Bill Wyman's personal archives and exclusive interviews with top Blues artists. Many colourful location photography shots from the Mississippi Delta and the Deep South. A extra bonus available for purchase is a double cd covering all the blues era's music and a dvd of live performances---what more could a blues collector ask for
THE ROLLING STONES "UNSEEN ARCHIVES" 2002 Parragon Publishing Hardcover 383 pages of colour and b&w photos covering 40 years of Rolling Stones history in pictures. This edition has the most amazing b&w photos taken from the archives of the Daily Mail's library. The early 60's Stones look, Blond Brian, Skeletal Keith, Moody Bill and Charlie and Mick the Sulky Sex Symbol---a in depth comprehensive portrait of the Greatest Rock n Roll Band.
