Celebrating PETS at March Break

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

As I write this we have just enjoyed a beautiful day, sunshine and warm temperatures, with the promise of more to come.  This weather seems more likely to happen on the first of April or May rather than the first week of March.  But I am not complaining , I am enjoying this unexpected treat.  March came in like a lamb, let us hope it leaves the same way.   We launched our Tales for Two program on Monday, March 1 but there is always room for little ones and their caregivers.  This is an unique storyhour for children ages 18 months to 34 months, the programs will run on Mondays , March 22 and March 29.  This was a trial run for this type of program to gauge interest in offering it again this year.   Saturday, March 13 is "Green " Day at the Library, drop by the Library during open hours and make a St. Patrick's Day craft for your favourite Irishman or for anyone else that is Irish on March 17th.   We, here at the Ridgetown Library are busily preparing for March Break as celebrate our "PETS" this year.  On Monday March 15 there will be "PET" crafts in the afternoon after 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. for families to enjoy.  Tuesday, March 16 is Comic Creation Day from 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.  Our Computer trainers will be on hand to assist young people, ages 8-12 to create their own comics online, print them off and colour them.  Pre-registration is required for this program, please contact the Library for more information.  There will be one on one computer classes offered that day following the program.  These classes are open to all and they are free.  Please contact the Library to book your lesson time.  Thursday, March 18 will be a busy day at the Library, we will be having a special program, "Caring for Your Pets".  Students from the Vet Tech program at the Ridgetown College will be helping us to look after our "PETS".  Bring your questions and concerns.  This program will run from 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. and everyone is most welcome.  Also on that day there will be a Special Family Storyhour at 6:45 p.m.  Bring your favourite stuffed "PET" for a time of stories, games and crafts about "PETS".  On Friday, March 19 will be our "PET" Movie Day at the Library from 2:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m.  Come along and enjoy the show.   We are very pleased to be having a special adult program on Tuesday, March 23 at 7:00 p.m.  Fran Lucid and Linda Nagle will present, "Amazing Grace: a 800 km Pilgrimage Along the El Camino.  This program is free and all are most welcome.   I spent the last week of February at the Ontario Library Association's Superconference and got the opportunity to attend various sessions, mainly dealing with Library programming.  But the highlights for me were attending the Conference Plenary sessions and in particular hearing LGen the Honourable Roméo Dallaire (Ret), Senator speak of his experiences in Rwanda and to listen to his beliefs about the future of this country.  A true statesman to whom I listened with great pleasure.  Two more high points were listening to Susan Aglukark sing and talk about her experiences growing up in Canada's Far North and her life as a recording artist.  And finally listening to Eric Walters talk about his writing and the Creation of Hope Campaign that he has established in Kenya.  It was a wonderful experience and I was very glad that I was fortunate to be chosen to attend this event.  There is one thing that was re-established for me during this conference and it is a recurring theme throughout this column , LIBRARIES ARE MORE, that is my mantra now.  And to see just how much MORE we are, drop by and check us out.
