Turn out the lights…

Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis has left the building. Or for yet another cliché, the fat lady has sung. Wallaceburg Jr. B lacrosse is done for another season.
No playoffs for the Red Devils this year as the last two games, Friday (June 18) against the Windsor Clippers and Saturday’s (June 19) away game against the St. Catherine’s Spartans were “must win” games.
To some, it might look like Friday’s game against the Clippers was a clear 12-8 loss, but for those who saw the game first hand, it was an incredible match. The term that comes to mind for the referees of the game is “blind-sided” during the second period. I think that’s the right phrase for only seeing penalties on one side. 11 penalties for Wallaceburg, (compared to 5 for Windsor) leaving only three players on the floor for what seemed to be forever.
The first period was classic lacrosse with a tied score of 2-2, but with so many players out of action in the second period, Windsor managed to score 7 times against our 4. After that, it was a long hard road to play catch up in the third. And it was that game that ended the Red Devil’s hopes of a playoff berth.
Saturday’s game against the Spartans was anti-climatic and based on the final score 22-4; we could have called that one in and saved the bus fare.
Some insights from the outside:
This was my first year as a volunteer for the Red Devils. The club needed someone with computer skills and I was available. There’s a story in there, but I’m waiting for the club president (Bill Logan) and the general manager (Rick Shepley) to buy me a brew before I decide if I tell that one!
We, who have lived most of our lives in Wallaceburg, know we are a small town. We don’t pretend to be something we’re not, but, we are NOT small town talent!
Out of over 700 players in this year’s Ontario Jr. B league, our own Clint Lamarsh is ranked in the top ten scoring players. Our Rob Pollock is ranked in the top 15, and Jordan Durston and Reid Miller are ranked in the top 50!
That’s just the offence players. We had one hell of a team in defense as well!
