Jesus Christ Superstar: Great cast, great story and great music!!!!!

For people of my generation – the baby boomers – it is a signature piece of musical theatre that many of us can sing along with. We know it better than almost any other piece of theatre that’s surfaced in the last 40 years. So, it was with much anticipation that I entered the Avon Theatre to watch Jesus Christ Superstar, the rock opera that launched the career of Andrew Lloyd Webber, the superstar of musical theatre over the last four decades.

Grapes of Wrath somehow falls short of the mark for this theatergoer…..

I am a huge John Steinbeck fan…..I believe that Of Mice and Men and Grapes of Wrath are two of the greatest books in the history of American literature. So, when it was announced that the Stratford Shakespeare Festival would mount a production of Grapes, I was extremely excited. I thought I’d be in for one of the greatest performances I’d seen in the Festival City.

The Homecoming: Gutwrenching and hardhitting theatre….

Not knowing what you’re getting into when you take your seat to watch a piece of theatre can be a wonderful experience….but it can also be a bit unnerving. That was the case last week as I sat in the Avon Theatre and watched the Stratford Shakespeare Company’s production of the Harold Pinter classic, The Homecoming.

The Misanthrope: A good message for modern times

Watching the Misanthrope, the masterpiece by French playwright Molliere, as it is performed by the company of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, one cannot help but be struck by the utter relevance of the piece in today’s world. While the main character, Alceste, struggles with the insincerity of his age, you just know that things are a whole lot more insincere today.
