Summer reading program a big success
Tuesday, August 10, 2010
The view from my desk these past few weeks has been one of eager, chattering hordes of children as they made their way into the Library. We have enjoyed presenting this years Summer Reading program, "Destination Jungle", as we combined fun AND learning. I believe we all learned something in the process. This is our final week of Summer Reading with the Wrap Up Party on Friday, August 13 which kicks off with Chatham-Kent's Storyteller, Patrick Douglas at 1:30 p.m. We are encouraging everyone that participated in our Summer Reading program to attend and enjoy the show.
On Monday, August 23 , we are very pleased to welcome back the Reptiles @Risk group for another interesting presentation beginning at 2:00 p.m. This group will be talking about Ontario reptiles and amphibians which are at risk and what we can do about it. The presentation last year was a great success and all those in attendance really enjoyed it, even me.
Our Adult Summer Reading program continues until the end of August with new challenges and new books to enjoy , every two weeks. With a chance to win a grand prize at the end of the program.
And as difficult as it is to believe , not only has the Back to School shopping frenzy begun but the decorations for Hallowe'en AND Christmas are beginning to be seen in the stores. I don't know about you, but I think I just caught up to Summer and am reluctant to even begin to think about CHRISTMAS ! But we do need to be planning ahead and we have plans for our Fall programming in place. We are planning on offering a full slate of children's and adult programs beginning with our popular Mother Goose , which will begin on Friday, September 3 at 9:30 a.m. Pre-registration is encouraged, for more information , please call the Library at 519-674-3121.
Our Book Sale in July was a great success, our thanks to all who came and supported us and also many thanks to our Ridgetown Friends Group who came out to give us a helping hand. We still have a large selection of juvenile fiction and juvenile picture books for sale, please stop by and help us reduce the surplus.
When you visit the Ridgetown Library over the next few months you will see a new face behind the desk. We are pleased to welcome a new staff member, Lisa Law to our branch as she is filling in for Kathy Hill, who is working in Highgate until the end of the year. Lisa reads extensively and has worked in several library situations, please make her feel welcome.
As always I am humbled and pleased by the responses to this column and to your support of our Libraries. We have no idea when we make these plans what kind of reception we will receive but it is always a positive one. Thank you, thank you, thank you for making our jobs so much easier.
My name is Vera Ellen Todd-Roberts and I am currently the Branch Head of the Ridgetown Branch of the Chatham-Kent Public Library. I have worked for the Chatham-Kent Public Library system for thirty-five years and I am proud to say that I have worked in every branch of the Library system over those years. I make my home in Highgate with my spouse , Michael Roberts in the home that was once my grandfather's. I was born and raised in the Palmyra area and have made Chatham-Kent my home since then. I am the proud mother of two sons and several grandchildren, including some four footed fuzzy ones.
